WOE IS US! CROC ROCK IS BACK

"It went late, very late . . . what could I say to my wife? "Darling, I've been beaten up again"? Let's face it, she's as credulous as hell . . ."  - Vivian Stanshall

In one the most significant developments of the 21st Century, it is with great pleasure and much anticipation that we announce the return of Croc Rock.

It’s been more than 5 years since the last one  at the now demolished Yarra Park pavilion. The most difficult aspect has been finding a suitable venue that can cater for the unique requirements of a Croc Rock.

Date: Saturday 14 June 2003

Time: 8.00pm till late, very late . . .

Venue: Middle Park RSL

Address: Canterbury Rd, Middle Park – enter via either of 2 tunnels underneath lightrail opposite Gunn Island Hotel (Middle Park Hotel). Venue is approx 300 m towards Fitzroy St from the pub.

A large selection of refreshments will be available, and a DJ will be provided.

The majority of those presently at the club have never experienced a Croc Rock, but no doubt have heard about them. Here is an opportunity to rekindle an institution that may well continue for  years to come.

If you have any queries, China  and Peos are the men you turn to.

THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMING

The gruelling A Section schedule sees the Old Xavs travel to Tuckers Road for the clash against Haileybury.

The 'Burys ran Bernards to the wire last Saturday at the Snakepit, and will be keen to atone at their home ground against an Old Xavs team that performed way below its best last week.

Haileybury have made an impressive start to the season after being promoted from B Section.  Coached by ex-St. Kilda player Mick Dwyer, they have added significantly to the personnel which went down to OM’s in last years B-Grade Grand Final. The pattern for OH thus far has been kicking big scores but also being scored against. Second to St. B’s for points scored, and fifth highest for points against.
For our part, the task is again there for the players to be able to perform at a consistent level week in and week out, and see that the confidence boosting wins of the last three weeks now sets the challenge of playing in opposition territory, using unfamiliar changing rooms, adapting to differing ground surface and wind conditions, and being able to defeat a side in the top four.

The 2s and 3s are well matched with their opponents and are expecting tough games.

The Crocs stroll out to De La for their weekly clinic, while club legend Manny Nicolosi temporarily returns to the coaching caper as the 19s take on traditional rival Scotch.

The Scoobys look to get back on track against La Trobe after their shellacking last week.

Perhaps the biggest rumour in all of football this week is that Croc Rock is to make a return.  Ralph O'Shaughnessy, who holds the copyright on said event, made an emergency dash to Toorak Park to ensure that is not the case.

"They can't do it without me," said  a worried Ralph.

Can't they?

REUNION LUNCH: STORIES AND GLORIES ABOUND

Age has not wearied them, evidently.  120 or so past champions of the Old Xaverians ventured to a reunion lunch at Toorak Park on Saturday, and as you might expect, the beer and wine were not the only things that flowed freely.

With legends such as Billy Carroll, Mick Peppard, Steve Curtain, Joe McGrath, Andy Ralph and Killer Bourke swapping yarns you won't read in the history books or on this website, it was a sight to behold.

Unusually, most of the Xavs arrived on time, and by 12:01, the bar was doing brisk business.  Most adopted the conscientious approach and chose light beer, but when that ran out around 12:30, there were few qualms about flipping the lids on the green and red ones.

Over a fillet of beef, Michael Blood regaled the crowd with the story of his years as an Old Xavs player.  It was a great occasion that suffered a premature end due to VAFA rules.

Well done to Gavan Woodruff and Porky Rhoden for all the organisation that went into the event.

R7: 1s- BINGA, BIDDA DEFUSE BLUES

The large crowd that flowed out of the past players' reunion lunch at Toorak Park on Saturday were treated to 45 minutes of free-flowing football that was enough to end the Varsity's chance of victory.  But beyond the 15 minute mark of the second quarter, there was little to excite the gathering save the opportunity of holding another reunion at half-time down the road at a certain licensed hostelry.

In truth, the game was over at that juncture.  The trouble was that the Xavs XVIII knew it, and soon lost interest in the non-contest.  To their credit, the Blues fought hard to contain the home team, and managed to drag the Xavs below a level required to mix it with some of the competition's premier performers.

Leading lights for the Old Xavs were the Killer Bees of the Old Xavs defense, Andy Biddlecombe and Nathan Bingham, who showed strength, dash and rebound, while Sammy Johnston and Andrew Oswald also chimed in with handy performances.  Tim Ockleshaw and Nick McInerney were effective around the ball, while Scott Mollard was damaging up forward.

Chris Vernuccio saw it thusly:

A dominant first half of football by the Old Xaverians has propelled the Xavs to second position on the VAFA Section A ladder.

Their rousing 58 point win built the Xavs' winning streak to three games and leaves them only one win behind pacesetters St. Bernards.

Forget the fact that the margin should be greater – Old Xavs posting 1.7 in the final quarter – this win was built up by a solid defence which stood up in the absence of captain Lachlan Ford.

“He (Ford) was out injured today.  He had a sore ankle so hopefully it’s the one week,” Old Xavs coach Michael Sholly revealed.  The was extra pressure put on them (the defence).  ‘Locky’ is a 30 stat man out of defence so we had to find 30 more possessions.”

They did.  In perfect conditions, the Xavs defence, consisting of Bingham, Landrigan, Brushfield Johnston restricted the Uni Blues to a miserly five goals for the match.

Uni Blues were kept goalless in the first term and only had two goals up until half-time, as Xavs established a match-winning 46-point margin at the break.

The Xavs' defenders were able to support one another at ground level, generate some run and link with their midfielders to create scoring opportunities.

Bingham was sensation in roving behind the packs and picking up the loose ball and there was a wealth of understanding and cohesion on the Old Xavs backline.

Many times a contest was creating with players such as Brushfield and Johnston bringing the ball to ground and deep into time-on in the first quarter, Bingham latched onto one of the loose balls and charged down through the corridor before directing a pin-point pass to Drake on the lead.   The resulting play leading to Xavs fourth goal for the term.

What would have been pleasing for the Old Xavs faithful is that this win was based on a collective team effort.

If it wasn’t Ockleshaw and McInerney controlling the midfield, it was Mollard and Pasceri who bobbed up with six goals for the first half.   Or it was Drake, Orlando and J. Bowen who found more touches on the ball as the game wore on.

And don’t forget Andrew Bowen, who improves with every game under his belt.

Old Xaverians have now posted solid wins over Uni Blues, St. Kevin’s and Old Ivanhoe with for a combined total of 50 goals and an average winning margin of 57 points.

The frightening aspect is that the side can only improve, according to Sholly.

“Our skills were again a bit poor.  Our kicking for goal in the last quarter was shocking.  The kicking is pretty poor though, we have to improve that.”

Based on the Xavs last three results, belief and confidence are surely on the rise at Toorak Park.

OLD XAVERIANS        4.1   9.2   13.4    14.11   (95)
UNI BLUES                    0.1   2.4     4.4       5.7    (37)

R7: 19s FIRE TOO LATE

Again another disappointing day for the Junior 1s, with a very poor showing against the second top side Uni Blues. Unfortunately the Xavs seemed a little distracted by playing  at their alma mater and it reflected on the scoreboard.  Uni  totally dominated the first three quarters of the game. The last quarter was much more encouraging with players finally getting out of first gear and slamming on 7 goals to zip to go down fighting by 13 points.

In the first five minutes, the Xavs lost one of their most consistent players in Tim O'Meara, who badlybroke his wrist.  It's a sad blow for "Rat", as he has been one of their best over the year and he will now miss 6 weeks. The side is very lightly represented by 2nd year players, with only 8 "class of 2001" guys taking to the field on Saturday, and not having Rat will be a big hole to fill.

Unfortunately the guys just didn't give a yelp until the last quarter when the whole side lifte, trying to instil some pride into the result. The last quarter was probably one of Xavs' best for the year.

Matt O'Hanlon was the leading goal kicker for the day with 3 goals while Josh Agius kicked 2 and the rest were shared by Scanlan, Nadinic, Sapuppo, Ford and Corcoran. Only two players were consistent for the whole match - the skipper Michael Scanlan and Damian Ford. Scanlan has been terrific all year while it was great to see Damian Ford bounce back after being dropped to the seconds the week before. He really came back hard and tried his heart out all day.

Back to the drawing board this week as the Xavs confront third-placed Old Scotch in a massive clash. Interesting to note that both St Bernards' and Uni Blues officials have sought Coach Dugganout after the game to tell him that the Xavs are the best side they have played.  If they can play 4 quarters of good football on any given day, they will beat any team in the competition.

OLD XAVERIANS         1.1   3.3   3.4    10.5   (65)
UNIVERSITY BLUES 3.2   7.6  11.9   11.12 (78)

Goals: O'Hanlon 3, Agius 2, Corcoran, Scanlan, Ford, Nadinic, Sapuppo.

Best: Ford, Scanlan, Purcell, Roache, Agius, O'Hanlon.

R7: MENAGES MAUL SCAREY CAREY

This game was a mismatch right from the very start, as the Carey backline was noted introducing themselves to their team mates.  This game places the 3rds in a perfect position going into the top of the table challenge against Old Essendon next week.  Essendon had the bye but we at least got a training run and goal kicking practice.  Most importantly, there were no injuries and a number of players will be fitter for the run.

Once again our ability to provide space for our forwards - even on a small ground.  Fourteen different goalkickers tells the story, with Marcus Quinn and Daniel Stoney kicking bags of 6 and 5 respectively, despite being rested for a quarter each.  O'Callaghan, Furletti & O'Kane were also excellent targets.  Jonnie McLean's 2 goals 5 behinds could have been an exceptional day at the park.

The five goals that Carey kicked were absolute flukes.  The ground was so small that they only had to kick in the general direction of the goals from the centre square and they had a chance of scoring.  Fortunately our onballers and mid fielders, such as Marcus Aikman, Rich Harley, Simon Ainsworth, Carey Hoare, Nick Larkins, Rory Ford, Andrew Jones, Dan Mackay and James Silk et al were so dominant that Carey rarely got first use of the ball.  The precision ruck work of Laurence was brilliant.

Hoare was great on the half back flank and Nolan showed he had something to offer the side with his attack on the ball and accurate left foot. Erfurth and Calhaem didn't have a great deal of work but were polished in all the contests they were involved in.  Calhaem's last quarter effort to burst through a pack of Carey players and deliver the ball deep into the forward line were reminiscent of his glory days.

Dan McKay started off with the first goal. We were able to add six more in the quarter - 2 to Quinn and McLean and one each to Stoney and Higgins. Higgins had a great game and was a welcome addition to the side. His attack on the ball is only matched by that of Luke Curtain. Enough said about the 5 minute lapse that enabled Carey to kick 2 goals

The second quarter was our first 10 or more goal quarter - (return of 11 goals).  Silk dominated his wing and Rich Harley took over at the bounce downs. Quinn snared another 2 goals and his pace off the mark will continue to cause defenders problems if we give him the space to lead. His accuracy at goal will probably see him tutoring Shooter and McLean during the week. Stoney bagged 3 goals for the term with his absolute dominance at centre half forward. Although kicking straight, Stoney will not be tutoring anyone at kicking helicopters.

Higgins, Farly, Silk, Hoare, O'Callaghan and Harley made up the remaining goal kickers in the second quarter.
The third quarter started as the second - that elusive forward Quinn was at it again with 2 goal - one a monster from 45 out. O'Callaghan chipped in with 2 and the cherry picker O'Kane snagged 2, one of which he robbed from Higgins. Luke Curtain also helped himself to a goal. Our continual dominance at the stoppages was giving our forwards every opportunity to operate in space. Anthony Curtin and Lawrence were great in the Ruck. The palming of Lawrence was particularly good and it looks like the cohesion of the onballers is improving each week.

The final quarter started with Larkins capping off a great game by goaling. Furletti shook off his frustrations and settled down and kicked 2 goals and Stoney slotted another to have 5 for the game. It was pleasing the game was completed with the intensity and application as it started.

OLD CAREY             2.0     2.2        4.3        5.5      (35)
OLD XAVERIANS  7.4   18.10   25.16    29.22  (196)

Goals: Quinn 6, Stoney 5, O'Callaghan 3, O'Kane, Furletti, Higgins, McLean 2, McKay, Farly, Silk, Hoare, Harly, L. Curtain, Larkins

R7: SCOOBYS DO LITTLE

The Old Xaverians U/19(2)’s were hoping to continue their impressive form in May against a simile placed Fitzroy Reds. It was evident from the beginning that Fitzroy’s distinctive height and size advantage would be very difficult to match up against. With key midfielder Ted Rubira clashing into the field umpire just minutes into the game, sidelining him for the rest of the game with an injured knee, the Scooby’s chances were greatly diminished.

The Fitzroy Reds played fierce and inspired football, a performance that would even challenge our U/19(1) team. Despite the heroic efforts of Liam Ginnivan, Mark Trovato and Pete Chester, Fitzroy were unstoppable – none more so than their full forward. David Rees and Dale Kaine did their best efforts to thwart the constant Fitzroy attack, while Ciaran Nolan was again the team’s best forward kicking 3 goals. But, despite these efforts the Scooby’s three game winning streak came to an abrupt end.

After 7 games away from McHale Stadium, the team is really looking forward to playing La Trobe this week on home soil.

ROUND 7 PREVIEW

No rest for the wicked.  With the past players attending the lunch at Toorak Park, a bumper crowd is expected to see the Old Xavs take their record to 5-2.

The Blues will have other ideas and will be a real threat if the Xavs don't come to play

Blues' 2s are flying high, unbeaten at the top of the ladder and Chris Gawne's tribe will have their work cut out for them.

It's top versus bottom as the 3s journey to Carey looking to boost their percentage.

Speaking of percentage, the Crocs have a paltry percentage of 335.  We'll see where it is Saturday after they are finished with Marcellin.

The 19s expect a tough clash with Uni Blues, while the Scoobys are hoping for another big one against the Fitzroy Reds to keep their chances humming.

R6: 19s FALL IN FACE OF BERNARDS ONSLAUGHT

Unfortunately Old Xavs couldn't hold back the St.Bernards tidal wave in the last quarter after having the home side "on toast" half way through the thrid quarter.

The Xavs played some of the best and hardest football for the year but fell away in the last quarter as Bernies piled on 9.7 to 0.1 in the last quarter for a comfortable win.

Although disappointed by the outcome, the Xavs showed they can mix it with the best and despite the fade-out, there are definite positives to take from the match. The skipper Michael Scanlan was impressive, as was Tim O'Meara on the wing and Nick Serafini.

Good teams shouldn't lose after being 30 points up half way through the third, so the Xavs must learn from the loss and be better for it. Back to the drawing board this week though as they face up to the Students in a 2nd versus 3rd clash that the Xavs must win to stay in touch with the top sides.

ST BERNARDS         3.2    5.3    7.6     16.13   (109)

R6: 3s BURY THERRY

This game produced probably their best four quarter effort for the season. If this is the benchmark from which all future efforts will be based, the Menages will be a very successful team and one that upholds the Old Xavs spirit. Due to the large numbers who want to represent the OXFC, some players have had to spend time in the rotation pool.

When their turn comes around, they are standing up and are certainly making inroads into becoming part of the nucleus of the side. There is pressure on all players for their positions and this can on be healthy and should lead to improvement in everyone as they attempt to solidify their positions.

The day had very few blemishes and we started by winning the toss and kicking to the scoring end. From the first bounce the Xavs'  dominance in the ruck with Lawrence, Anthony Curtin and later Stoney directing the ball to  advantage. McKay, Ford, Aitkins and Harly reaped the benefits of this and the ball was moved forward quickly into an open forward line. Luke Curtain dominated his wing and has been a great asset to the side, leading by example with his attack on the ball.

O'Kane, making the change from loose and lanky forward to a tight checking backman, took over on the half back flank and was continually straightening up the side by directing the ball back through Stoney. Goals to Furletti, Ford (first in many seasons, but not the last for this season), McLean and O'Callaghan put the Xavs in a good position at quarter time. The only apparent blemish for the quarter was some slackness in manning up, which allowed Therry a goal it didn't earn.

Therry Penola settled down  at the start of the second quarter and the contest became more even. That the Xavs  increased their lead despite the opposition raising the level of their game was very pleasing. Luke Curtain continued his dominance from the half back flank and Marcus "Hitman" Aikman started to get plenty of the ball and use it in the usual precise manner. Stoney continued to be a great target at centre half forward. Gleeson was leading and marking well, but the less said about his shooting at goal the better. Certainly it is something to work on at and outside training. Goals to Stoney, Ainsworth, and Furletti allowed the Xavs  a 27 point lead at the long break.

The third quarter saw the Menages steady and then take over the game after they banged on 2 goals immediately after half time. Anthony Curtin really stood up - marking and hitting with some 50 metre passes. Stoney moved into the ruck to get a few touches and when moved back to centre half forward, started to dominate instead of being purely a contesting target. The dominance was aided by O'Kane, who racked up countless possessions and directed the ball to the Stoney zone. Stoney helped himself to a goal, as did the elusive forward Quinn. Spillane accepted a pass, shielded by Quinn with some great team play and kicked truly, while O'Callaghan slotted another class goal, which was great reward for his work ethic in the forward line. The six goal lead at ľ time, set up the Xavs for their first attempt at finishing a side.

Finish Therry off they we certainly did, with goals to the "meek and mild" Aikman, Hoare, Anthony Curtin and Quinn. Ainsworth was a significant contributor for the whole game and continued to threaten the goals from the half back flank. Anthony Curtin was a good target at centre half forward and creates some flexibility in the side if Stoney is needed elsewhere. There have been few mentions of the backline, as they continue to nullify all opponents week in - week out. James Dynon as always shutdown numerous dangerous situations, Ralph continues to blanket the full forwards and Calhaem marked and used the ball particularly well, when the loose man in defence.

OLD XAVERIANS             4.6   7.6   11.10   15.12 (102)
THERRY PENOLA OB     1.2   3.5    5.5        7.11  ( 53)

Goals: Furletti, O'Callaghan, Quinn, Stoney 2, Ford, McLean, Ainsworth, Spillane, Anthony Curtain, Aikman, Hoare
Best: O'Kane, Stoney, Anthony Curtain, Ford, O'Callaghan, Luke Curtain

R6: SCOOBYs: IT'S A MERRY MONTH OF MAY

The Scooby Doo's continued their amazing form in the month of May with a easy 55 point victory over Yarra Valley.

Despite the low scoring affair the Xav's were dominant for the entire game with Yarra Valley scoring their only two goals late in the final quarter. The Scooby's backline must be commended for not allowing the opposition to score in both the first and third quarters - for the third week in succession!

Leading from the front again were Tim Rogan and Mark Trovato with their aggressive attack on the ball. In the forward line, Ciaran Nolan was masterful kicking 5 brilliant goals. While around the ground Pete Chester and Ted Rubira were among the best. With three consecutive wins the Scooby's now clash in a 'match of the round' contest with a similarly placed Fitzroy Reds.

OLD XAVERIANS(2)   2.0    5.4    9.8    11.10     (76)

R6: 1s: DASH + PASH = THRASH

The Old Xavs reasserted their dominance at Elsternwick Park by smashing archrival St Kevins by 64 points today.  SKOB had no answers to the run of the young Xavs outfit, nor for the strength and sharpshooting of the rookie John Pasceri who nailed six majors.

James Drake and Scott Mollard also provided reliable avenues forward, while Andrew Oswald, Tim Ockleshaw, James Scanlan and John Bowen provided many opportunities for teammates.  The defence asserted itself from the earliest, with Bingham providing great rebound.

In truth, the scoreboard did not tell the true story of the dominance of the Old Xavs , who faltered only with some wayward passing into their forward zone.  From the outset, SKOB  were in trouble, unable to score with the breeze until the latter part of the quarter.

The second stanza saw the Old Xavs waste a number of forward thrusts but still increase their lead.  But it was the five goals to none third quarter that sealed the game.

Coach Sholly was pleased with the team's  determination to stick to the game plan and can be well satisfied with the healthy winning margin.

Chris Vernuccio reports:

After kicking the first four goals of the game, Old Xaverians were never in danger of being headed as they outclassed their opponents in every facet on the field.

There was no stopping the Xavs midfield running brigade, which was led admirably by John Bowen and vice-captain Tim Ockleshaw, as they ran away 64-point winners. The were ably supported by Damien Orlando, James Scanlan, Nick McInerney, Andrew Bowen and James Drake.

“You take a 10 goal win every week,” said Old Xaverians coach Michael Sholly.  “We started the game really well and we got a lot of run.  Kicking into the breeze helped us in the first quarter so then we kept the ball and ran it a lot better.”

Games are won by the strength of a team’s midfield and coach Sholly has an abundance of quality players to rotate through the centre, allowing his side to continually create pressure and outrun their rivals, while  St. Kevin's too often relied on too few.

The Xavs ran in numbers as they constantly supplied a forward line consisting of the in-form Scott Mollard, leading goalscorer James McDonnell and the dangerous John Pasceri, who played his best game of the season thus far.

“Our kicking hasn’t been as good as what I would’ve liked.  We missed a few too many,” exclaimed Sholly.  “But if we’re kicking 18 goals each week, we’re winning most games.”

As a crumbing forward, Pasceri has threatened to score a bag-full of goals and against St. Kevin’s he finally delivered with six.

“He has very clean hands.  He’s very hard to tackle; he can swing on his left (foot).  He’s got some attributes, hasn’t he?” Sholly proclaimed.

John Bowen also played his best game of the season.  As  last week, he didn't give the opposition any respite as he constantly ran down the wings between half-back and half-forward, gathering possessions at will and either clearing the defence or delivering to his forwards.

“He had a very good game, he’s had an excellent last two weeks,” said Sholly.

The difference between the two sides was that the Xavs showed more desperation.

Deep into the 28th minute of the third term, Lachlan Ford and Bingham tackled and harassed St. Kevin’s vice captain, Ryan, to deny him a late goal.  The ball managed to travel to the other end of the field where Mollard fed a handball to A. Bowen who slotted through a goal, completing a 12-point turnaround.

Thus St. Kevin’s went goalless in the third term, which effectively killed off the contest.

OLD XAVERIANS   5.4    9.9   14.13   18.18 (126)
ST KEVINS                3.3    6.4      6.9     8.14   (62)

Goals: Pasceri 6, Mollard 4, A Bowen 2, Ockleshaw, Drake, McDonnell, Scanlan, Brushfield, Orlando.

R6 PREVIEW

Last time we saw SKOB, they seemed pretty friendly.  Why wouldn't they have been - we'd just guaranteed their survival in A Section by going down in an upset at Toorak Park.

Hostilities will be resumed at headquarters on Saturday at VAFA HQ, with St Kevins intent on another turn-up after a flogging at the hands of the Bernies last week.

With Old Xavs at 3 and 2 and St.Kevs
at 2 and3 the implications of the four points are obvious.

SKOB coach Emmett Dunne has been keen to impose
his own style of play after the McArthur-Allen dynasty and will not let last Saturday's hiccup at the Snakepit affect his thinking.

11 May '03

PERFECT

Round 5 proved lucky for all, as the Old Xavs created another first in VAFA history by winning 6 games yesterday.

The 1s shook off a determined Ivanhoe in the second half to register a 50 point victory.

The 2s began well and continued in that vein all day to run out winners by 13 goals.

The 3s put it to Uni Blacks by four goals while the Crocs teased Prahran to finish 20 points to the better.

Both u19 teams scored wins, the 1s trouncing De La Salle by 11 goals and the Scoobys clobbering Westbourne by 38 points.

The competition for spots in all Old Xavs teams is fierce, with a record number of players at training and available for selection.

Let's hope that next week brings similar rewards.

R5: BACK TO BASICS PAYS DIVIDENDS FOR 1s

After a first half that frustrated players, officials and spectators alike, the Old Xaverians routed the Hoers with their relentless running and dependable team play at Toorak Park on Saturday.  It was a critical win for the home team, who remain in the top half of the ladder and in touch with the competition front-runners.

From the outset, the Xavs appeared willing to play to the team plan, though some wayward kicking for goal brought little scoreboard joy.  In the third stanza however, the Red and Blacks found the timing and accuracy that had previously eluded them.  In the last, the defence rediscovered its meanness and propelled the Xavs forward on many occasions, giving the forwards ample opportunity to extend the lead.

Overall, it was a welcome return to form, with several players having their best outings for the season and the team displaying that 2003 holds much promise.

Chris Vernuccio reports:

Ten minutes of dominance was enough for Old Xaverians to throw off a spirited challenge from Old Ivanhoe.

Back at Toorak Park for the first time since Round 2, goals from Andrew Bowen, Damien Orlando and Andrew Dillon in the time-on period of the third term enabled the Xavs to go to the break with a 20-point lead and the all-important psychological advantage.

Early goals to Scott Mollard and, Orlando at the start of the fourth term snuffed out any chance Old Ivanhoe had of rescuing the game as the Old Xavs ran away 50-point winners.

Mollard has found a rich vein of form in the past two weeks, booting three goals to complement his three last week against Marcellin.   He was shifted from centre-half forward to full-forward and stood up as the main forward target.

“He did excellently.  He tried very his best at centre-half forward, he worked hard.  We were lacking at full forward today, and the good thing is he can lead and kick (goals),” said Old Xaverian coach Michael Sholly.

Old Xavs had an opportunity to stamp their authority on the game, but were unable to inject any scoreboard pressure as chances went begging.

Ockleshaw, heavily tagged since his heroics against St. Bernards, was eased into the game by starting in the forward line,  Sholly preferring Orlando in the centre to generate some run from the centre.

Halfway through the quarter, Ockleshaw was moved into the midfield where he relished the freedom and helped kicked Old Xavs’ first goal 45 metres out, 15 minutes in, after a one-two with Mollard through the corridor.

John Bowen ran tirelessly down the wing between centre half-back and centre half-forward, gathering possessions as a loose man, in what was his best game for the season.

“It was more of a relief (the win),” exclaimed Sholly.  “Because we still didn’t play very well today.  Our skills were down, but we still got plenty of the ball.  We had more stats in the first-half then we did for the whole game last week (against Marcellin).  At least we had out hands on the ball but we turned it over (too often).”

R5: 2s TOO CLASSY

Yet another big task confronted the resurgent 2nd XVIII outfit on Saturday, this time against an Ivanhoe side that had compiled an impressive 3-1 record to open the season. Coach Gawne emphasised the importance of building on the good form shown against Marcellin, and the players responded to the challenge registering 9 goals to two in the opening half. The class and hardness of Coughlan, Santalucia and Skidmore in the midfield complemented another dominant ruck display from Carey.

The side faced a less than complimentary three quarter time address after slowing a little after the main break, but the Xavs once again took affirmative action by finishing off their opponents in fine fashion, kicking seven final quarter goals to one as the winning margin extended to 82 points.

Ben Dixon made an excellent return to the side after a lengthy injury induced lay-off and was prominent in the middle, while Nick Baker slotted home six snag rolls in a fine display across half forward.

The all-star half back line of Biddlecombe, Brushfield and Hannebery was ruthless, while David Walsh again provided exceptional run and leadership from the back half, even sneaking forward for a rare six-pointer.

If 21 players continue to contribute like they did on Saturday, then the side should go into the round 6 contest against St.Kevin's with much confidence.

OLD XAVERIANS 3.4   9.8   12.14   19.15 (129)

OLD IVANHOE      0.2   2.4     5.6        6 11 (47)

Goals: Nick Baker 6, Andrew Wilson 4, David Sapuppo 3, Chris Santalucia 2, Hannabery, M Walsh, D Walsh, Dixon.
Best: Nick Baker, David Walsh, Stuart Skidmore, Richard Carey, Chris Santalucia, Ben Dixon.

R5: 3s MOVE TO THE TOP OF THE TABLE

This result was a typical team effort, which is something the Old Xavs should continue to strive for the remainder of the season. Their previous games had been full of great individual efforts but this week was played in a more unified manner and that will certainly be their aim for the rest of the year.

Particularly pleasing was the manner in which the 3s  were able to steady and answer the two or three runs  made at them after quarter time. This away win over one of their main rivals shows that the Xavs are certainly going to be competitive this year as long as they keep putting in the effort both ways – offensively and defensively.

The first quarter was one of missed opportunities. There were 4 missed set shots and 2 or three other opportunities to register goals. It was left to Dave Furletti to show the way in the closing minutes. The readiness of all players to put their bodies in from the opening bounce was impressive and is what Old Xavs teams are all about.

Andrew Jones, Anthony Orlando and Silk certainly had an impact on the game and with Daniel Stoney and Michael O’Callaghan dominating the half forward line, they could have finished the game by quarter time.

While the first quarter was controlled by the midfield and forwards, the second quarter into the wind allowed the defenders to display their skills. Joe McGrath was the man of the second quarter with marking and protection of team mates. Warren Erfurth continues to show great improvement and his marking and Julian McInerney’s straight line running were highlights of the quarter. Andrew Jones continued to wreak havoc and break the lines and was duly rewarded with a goal. Silk, James Ogilvy (who provided an extra option up forward) and Troy Gleeson also kicked majors. The Gleeson and Ogilvy goals were reward for the whole forward line, who pressed the defenders into making errors. The tackling and pressure placed on the opposition has certainly improved since the Crocs and Trinity games.

The third quarter started promisingly with goals to David Rennex and Daniel Stoney, but once again the Xavs struggled to use the wind to our advantage. Dave Furletti goaled late in the quarter, providing a 5 goal lead at the change. Anthony Orlando continued to pick up possessions at will, while Stoney and O’Callaghan were giving  great options on the forward line.

With a start studded Menages bench that included Rennex, Warry, Stoney et al, the opposition created a tight contest with 2 early goals. In typical Old Xavs form, they steadied and  were able to get the ball forward for O’Callaghan to kick the sealer.

James Hardwick showed exceptional composure and toughness against Blacks and Luke Curtain in his debut for the Menages with his courage and hard work showed he will be an instrumental part of this team in 2003.  Everyone stepped up to take responsibility at crucial moments of this game and it was a thoroughly deserved the 4 goal win.  It was another great game from Anthony Curtain, whose improvement over the last few weeks has been huge.

Jonnie McLean had the “almost play of the day” with his screaming run down the wing, cruelly cut short by a doubtful off the ball free kick.  Jonnie was allegedly heard to beg and plead with the umpire not to destroy such a great run.  It wouldn’t have happened if Sinkers was umpiring !

Special mention to Rod Calhaem as boundary umpire and a suggestion that is usually not a good idea to empty your bank account before you attend a game.

R5: U19s - DUGGO's DIGGERS DUMP DE LA

Xavs hosted the in form De La Salle team at McHale Stadium and had to do so without injured leading goal kicker Andrew Armstrong.  Bu there were plenty of other players happy to kick the goals with no fewer than 11

finding themselves in the goalkickers' list by game’s end.

In their best performance so far, the Xavs ran harder than they have all year and the results showed as they drew away after an even first half.

Josh Agius and Nick Corcoran were getting plenty of the ball, while Matt Roache was providing a great contest across half forward. Cam Purss in the ruck was getting first use and Scanlan and Gidley held the backline together superbly, restricting De La to just 5 goals. Nick Serafini playing his first game was a class above most others on the field.

The U19s look forward to their biggest test this week against St.Bernards, who must be a pretty awesome line up going by the results. It could be a September preview.

XAVS THANK SPONSORS IN STYLE

Friday night's President's Dinner at the chic Westin Hotel in downtown Melbourne gave the club the opportunity to thank its sponsors for their generous and continuing support.

It was an evening of fine food and wine, with entertainment provided by Dermot Dann, with an offering from guest speaker Dan Lonergan of ABC Grandstand.

An added bonus was the poignant and thoughtful views on our great game expressed by the Ralph Bros. and Damien Honan.

A HUGE ROUND

What do we know about Ivanhoe?  Other than being named after a hero in a novel by Sir Walter Scott, and the fact that they are yet to win a game this season, very little.

Last year, as they strode toward the finals, they marched into Toorak Park and took four valuable points from the Old Xaverians. On Saturday they will be intent on resurrecting their season by repeating the feat.

After just missing the finals last year, and considered by some as being unlucky not to be there, Ivanhoe is slowly building up momentum, as evidenced by a strong showing until ľ time against St.Bernards last Saturday. Their better players thus far have included ex-Sydney Swans player John Stevens, who has been winning possessions everywhere; talls in J.Weddle, Donaldson, and Toovey have been multiple goal-kickers, whilst danger smalls/midfielders in Lochran and Lowe are starting to run into form.
Whilst Orchard is yet to appear, state player Hope will play his final game for the season this week, providing added motivation for the 'Hoers'.

The Xavs will not lack purpose either.  Their last fortnight has been decidedly less productive than their first, and has prompted a rethink among coaches and players alike.

A Section in the VAFA may be the most competitive grade of football in the nation and Saturday’s clash should be a beauty.

Likewise, the resurgent Xavs 2s face a stern test against the Hoers, who have won 3 of 4 games thus far.

The 3s travel to Uni Blacks for a top of the table clash. Neither team has lost this year, but one will blot their copybook by 5pm Saturday.

The U19 (1) team face De La  and should be confident based on pre-season form. However, both teams are batting .750 since the real stuff began.

The Scoobys tackle Old Westbourne – again both teams are locked together on the ladder at 2-2.

Similarly, the unbeaten Crocs take on unbeaten Prahran in the local derby.

No excuses for missing this week - see you at the footy.

R4: 19s ROMP

The Old Xavs recorded a resounding victory over Marcellin at a blustery Bulleen on Saturday.  Marcellin had experienced two draws and then a narrow loss to competition pace-setters St.Kevins, so the clash was expected to be close.

An excellent build-up was not left in the sheds and the Xavs started well. Ryan Silvagni ran hard and straight out of the back line and it was terrible luck for him to  have to leave the field for the hospital with a badly broken nose after an errant elbow. Big SOS was starting to play well and the fact the injury occurred well off the ball reflects poorly on the Marcellin club. No doubt SOS will renew friendships in the return match.

The team’s tallest player big Cam Purss dominated the middle. Many times he leapt, grabbed the ball and kept running from the ruck contests.  It was a stellar performance after being challenged by the coach.

At the other end of the scale, Xavs smallest player Andy Ryan got plenty of the ball and was dangerous around goals, managing to snag four majors. Spearhead Andrew Armstrong started well, kicking two in the first quarter until a case of concussion saw him not add to his tally.

After half time, the Xavs really ran away with the match.  It was pleasing to see big Rob Fusimato have an impact at CHF, and the endeavour of Pat Purcell in throwing himself across a boot to stop a certain goal despite the game being well and truly in the bag.

Playing his first game, Andy Nadinic had plenty of touches and Oliver Gidley was strong at full back.

The other highlight was the Marcellin player who received a handball over the top then proceeded to turn and waltz straight in and kick the ball through the points a la Malcolm Blight. Good for football!

R4: TWOs TOO GOOD

Both sides entered the '02 Grand Final rematch at Bulleen Rd precariously positioned at 1-2 for the season, with Marcellin enjoying slight favouritism after opening their account at the Snakepit in round 3.

All pre-game hype aside, the red and the black produced some vintage Old Xavs reserves football in the first quarter, enjoying the aid of a slight breeze to kick 6 goals to zip through some attacking, direct football.

They could have blown the game open in the second term had it not been for inaccurate kicking. Wilson (4 goals for the day) and the elusive Quinn in the forward line continued to provide match-up headaches for the Eagles coaching staff, while Andy Biddlecombe, Hannebery and captain Walsh across half back repelled opposition forward thrusts with customary flair. However, two late Marcellin goals narrowed the half time margin to just 22 points, making for an interesting second half.

The OXFC midfield came out firing in the third quarter to put the result beyond doubt.

Coughlan, Santalucia, Dillon and Baker gathered countless possessions and reaped the benefits of Carey's fine ruck work, while Tim Maher made a welcome return from injury to be prominent around the middle.  Sapuppo provided excellent contests across half forward, while Pete Ryan was impenetrable at full back.

The Xavs applied exceptional pressure again in the last quarter when kicking against the wind and restricted their opponent to just one major for the stanza, eventually taking the contest by a commanding 56 points.

This win should act as a catalyst for the rest of the year. It seems after a sluggish opening to season '03, the team is finally hitting top gear and looking towards another four quarter effort against Ivanhoe next Saturday at Toorak Park.

MARCELLIN           0.2    3.2     4.4        5.5     (35)

R4:SCOOBYs DO IT SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

The 'Scooby Doos' were looking to end their two game losing streak and were up against the rough and tough Bulleen 'Bull-Ants' who were hoping for their first win of the season.

The Xavs knew it was a 'crunch match' that they really needed to win.  They had discussed the potential of winning the next three matches and this day would prove if they were capable of it. The team looked really strong on paper with the inclusion of Pete Chester, Ciaran Nolan and Louis Rowe, who had all played in the Old Xaverians U/19(1)’s the previous weeks.

Despite being the smaller side, the Xavs were the more physical team from the onset. In the centre, Liam Ginnivan and Jason Melvin-Smith were winning the ball off the ground and giving their forwards plenty of opportunities to score - and they did with Tom McInerney and Ciaran Nolan asserting their authority.

The Xavs ended the first up by 42 points, with their defence not allowing Bullen a score. The rain in the 2nd quarter made for slippery conditions and scrappy play. For most of the quarter the ball was on the ground and scoring became difficult.

In the back-line Mark Trovato and Tim Rogan were excellent, constantly repelling Bulleen attacks. Ted Rubira was sensational across the backline and on the wing, gathering plenty of possessions. The Xavs were slightly disappointed at half-time, having let the Bulleen team back into the game.

In the third quarter, the Xavs started to dominate all over the ground. Trovato had a run on the ball and was sensational with his aggression and Adam Faithful kicked a couple of brilliant crumbing goals. However the team’s poor delivery into the forward line as well as some inaccurate kicking for goal meant the score didn’t blow out. David Quinn’s ability to pick the ball up cleanly and deliver it really stood out under the conditions.

The last quarter was fairly even with Rubira and Quinn playing well, but the Xavs' minds had well and truly turned to that night's festivities at The Max Hotel. The end result a 74 point win and the Scooby Doos are back to a 2-2 record after four rounds. A great position to be in and only out of the top four on percentage.

OLD XAVERIANS   6.6   7.8   11.12   14.15   (99)

R4: THREES BREEZE

In the top of the table clash of the Titans, the OX 3rd XVIII ventured out to Brunswick Street Oval on Saturday  to face a much improved Fitzroy Reds team.  The Reds have obviously scoured the pubs of Fitzroy in their latest recruiting drive and seem to have picked up quite a few players of reasonable ability but significantly varying degrees of fitness.

In a BOG effort, Ben Dixon completely dominated the game and a return to 2nds must be imminent. He appears to be over his injury and didn’t have any trouble finding the leather.

Joe McGrath had a solid first half, but really stamped himself on the game when he moved to CHB. Hoops was instrumental in ensuring that Fitzroy had great difficulty in getting ball past the half back line in the second half.  Daniel Stoney had the better of his opponents in the ruck contests all day and was prominent when resting at CHF.

Congratulations to Anthony “Magic” Orlando who took the “Attempted Mark of the Day”. Magic found the ball on many occasions, although sometimes tried to do too much with it and didn’t always make the most of it. This was still a very good game from a clearly talented player.  Chris Warry also had an excellent game, a genuine four quarter effort.

This side is very lucky to have a captain of Wazza’s quality, both as a player and a leader.  Rory Ford showed the benefits of training for his recently completed marathon and spent most of the day on the ball and still had plenty of run in his legs. Simon Ainsworth showed plenty when he got his chance on the ball and a fitter Carey Hoare displayed some silky skills in the centre.  Chris Knott had a typically strong game. The most impressive aspect of his game on Saturday was his ability to man up - he made sure his opponent didn’t get a touch, but knew when to leave him to get many possessions himself.

Troy Gleeson kicked a couple early, but suffered from the delivery to the forward line not being as smooth as in the game against Trinity, largely due to Fitzroy’s ability to fill his leading space. Michael O’Callaghan also showed some good form and seems well suited to a half forward flank.  Jeremy Francis, despite suffering a serious cut to his head early in the game, had a reasonable return after injury and will be better for the run. A return to the twos shouldn’t be too far away.

Jake Ireland, while quiet by his standards for three quarters, had a very disciplined final quarter, tagging the Reds prime mover in the centre. Jedi started to find the ball and hopefully will carry this final quarter form into next week.  A back injury to “Rocket” Rod Calhaem meant limited game time, but another disciplined performance.

Warren Erfurth did an excellent job roughing up the “Bandana Man” who took his mind off the game for most of the second quarter as a result. Warren will be much better for the run and will improve with match fitness.  Simon McCarthy, while not as damaging as he can be, showed great courage playing with a broken nose. Wax’s value as one of the leaders of this team cannot be under estimated.

Rich Harley impressed with his hardness at the ball, James Dynon took some courageous and telling marks in the last quarter, Michael Ralph, once again, was solid at full back and Nick Larkins showed some promise in his limited game time. Special mention to Jules McInerney, who had a sterling game as runner, Luke Curtain, who excelled as goal umpire, and Marcus “Hitman” Aikman who ran all day, as boundary umpire.

Finally, the Old Xaverians Football Club owes a lot to Chris Warry and Jonnie McLean for their ongoing commitment to the 3rd XVIII. There is now pressure on he Seconds players to maintain their places. After the Easter break and the bye, we were a bit rusty and probably didn’t play to the best of our collective ability, although full credit must go to Fitzroy Reds. While there is still a long way to go in the 2003 season, it is fair to say that this is a very talented side which will go a long way.

R4: CROC SHOCK - PERCENTAGE DIPS!

New kids on the block Old Ivanhoe were clearly pumped up (never seen bigger Wayne Harmes!) for their encounter with the all conquering Crocodiles.

Despite his unusually large chassis, Ivanhoe captain ‘Super’ struggled to get through the banner constructed to celebrate his 100th. However, that was where their problems finished for the early portion and they were impressive in their endeavors to put pressure on the Crocodile ball carriers and entered the first change with a 3-point lead.

The Crocodile coaching staff was less than impressed with their reptilian charges and called for much greater accountability down back and demanded more shepherds and talk to create the space required to hit targets further down the ground.

New ‘Sandgroper’ Duncan Bond set the tone of a Crocodile recovery with some technically brilliant tackles and perennial play-makers such as Curnow, Berger and Hall began to respond to the challenge. A  6-goal second term carded the Crocodiles a clear advantage going into the long break with momentum and a clear strategy based on getting to the ball first that was started in the middle with ‘old stagers’ Fay, Landrigan and Jones.

In a somewhat spiteful second half that saw the man in white reach for the yellow card on no less than six occasions, the Crocodile cream began to rise to the top and Bloom with 3 handy goals sealed a hard fought 66 point win.

ROUND 4: FIVE OUTA SIX

Marcellin's Ones  spoilt the party for the Old Xaverians yesterday by blowing out the good guys by 59 points at slippery Bulleen.

The Xavs had no answer to the chipping, sliding game employed by the Eagles and were never in it after quarter time.

The loss spoiled the perfect Saturday, with all other teams winning.

The  results again reinforced the tough competition that is A Section.  There are no easy games and teams take opponents lightly at their peril.

Not that the Xavs underestimated Marcellin, who remain a classy lineup and a competition pacesetter.

Ace scribe Chris Vernuccio was at the game:

Old Xaverians were up against the odds on a wet and slippery Saturday afternoon at Marcellin College, with the conditions suiting a more experienced Marcellin.  The home team had all the answers in a demolition of Old Xavs.  In the greasy conditions, the Xavs couldn’t get their free-flowing running game going and despite the hearted efforts of many members of the team, they were simply outclassed by a much better drilled Marcellin side.

Old Xaverians began small in the forward line with John Pasceri starting in a forward pocket.  The move initially paid dividends as he had a hand in Old Xavs’ only two goals for the quarter.

A solid bump on McMillan by James McDonnell allowed Pasceri to pick up the loose ball and dish off a quick handball to James Drake who handballed to Nick McInerney who snapped Old Xaverians’ first goal for the game.

Half-way through the term, Pasceri’s hard work at the disputed ball allowed for a throw-in deep in the Xavs forward line, with the resulting boundary throw in allowing Hawkins to slot through a 50-metre goal.

As with the previous week against Old Scotch, Old Xaverians allowed their opponents first use of the footy and it proved damaging in the wet conditions.

Marcellin grabbeded the ascendancy at the start of the second quarter, with three centre clearances pocketing three early goals.  From that moment onwards, they never looked back.

“We didn’t get the ball.  We were second to the footy and they controlled the game from there.  We were battling there,” commented Old Xaverians coach Michael Sholly after the game.

“And that’s a case of the opposition being a little bit better and once the opposition has got on top of us we lost a bit of confidence.”

Old Xaverians' forward line of McDonnell and Damien Orlando (who booted four goals the previous week) were made redundant.  Supply from the midfield wasn’t forthcoming as Old Xaverians continually missed targets by hand and foot.

Old Xavs have a chance to return to the winners list  against winless Old Ivanhoe.

“We’re two (wins) and two (losses).  We’ve shown that we can play a good brand of footy.  In the last two weeks we haven’t been able to display it,” said Sholly.

MARCELLIN             3.6     9.8    13.10    17.11    (113)
OLD XAVERIANS    2.0     4.1        5.3        8.6       (54)

Goals: Mollard 3, McInerney, Pasceri, Howard, Hawkins, Ross.

Best: Holmes, Ford, Chatfield, J Bowen, Hawkins, McInerney.

Thankfully, all other Xavs teams fared better.

The 2s played an exceptionally strong second half to run away from Marcellin, while on the adjacent field, the U19 1s did likewise.

The 3s held off Fitzroy, Chambo's U19 2s belted Bulleen-Templestowe and the Crocs conducted their weekly clinic with a ten goal stroll over the Hoers.

Despite the victory, their percentage dropped to a paltry 570% - a cause for some concern among the team's hierarchy.

MARCELLIN LOOMS LARGE

There is no rest for the wicked, or even the good, in A Section.

The reward for Old Xavs this Saturday is a trip over the Eastern Freeway to play the Eagles, the third '02 finalist it has met in successive weeks. The Marcellin better players in the first three rounds have included
the usual suspects in Bernie Dineen, McMillan, Cox, Browne, Treganowan, and Johnston.

However, they have been well served in these early rounds by goalkickers in Daryll Marson (7) and  Nick Addison (6). Other players who have been prominent for the Eagles have included Peter Spence across half-forward, Michael Sier at both ends of the ground, and Luke Considine in defence.

Despite last week's showing against Scotch, the spirits remain high at Toorak Park.  The return of a number of players from injury, as well as the marked  improvement in form from the Reserves does provide the selectors with a  number of options as they address the strengths and weaknesses of the Marcellin side.

The Reserves look to build on their first victory last week against an Eagles' team that also has a 1 -2 record.

The 3s take on the Fitzroy Reds, who are similarly placed on the ladder, while both U19 teams have real chances for victories to open the month of May.

Meanwhile, the Crocs are chasing that psychological barrier of 1000%, just to ensure they stay top of the table.

OLDXAVS.com ENDS FIRST MONTH WITH 2000+ VISITORS

Despite the Easter Break and the Anzac long weekend, traffic to this website has steadily increased over its first month of operation to register more than 38,000 hits for April.

During the season, we are attempting to update the site at least twice a week, or as breaking news comes to hand.

Your continuing support is welcomed, as are your contributions and comments.
