Welcome to the final edition of the Lugar for season 2009.
They say the biggest margin in football is the difference between winning and losing. Nowhere was that more evident than at Sportscover Arena last Sunday, when Old Xavs held off a fast finishing De la Salle by three points, to take out the Club’s eleventh A grade Premiership.
In a final quarter where spectators attention was equally divided between the game and the seemingly stagnant time clock, all credit must go to the players and coaching staff for holding out such a determined opponent.
In this edition we turn to two former OXFC A Grade Premiership coaches to summarise the game.
It’s also timely to acknowledge a great year for the Club’s six teams, with five playing in finals and four making it through to the Grand Final. The Reserves were defeated by University Blues, yet they performed magnificently all year in their own right and additionally played no small part in the Seniors success. Many players vied for and achieved selection in the First XV111 throughout the season. This was a tribute to the coaching performance of both David Landrigan and his assistant coach in David Walsh and the work ethic of the playing group.
Finally, such a year would not have been possible without our valued members, sponsors, volunteers and supporters. Thank you, one and all.
This week’s Lugar is brought to you by Patrick (Photographers).

Setting the Scene - Last Week’s Pre match Summary
OXFC vs De La Salle
Both teams have been evenly matched throughout the season proper, with De La Salle meting out a first round loss to the Xavs by 18 points at Toorak Park.
This was followed by the game of the season in Round 10 at De La Salle, where a crowd estimated at between 1,500 & 2,000 witnessed a highly skilled match, played in Spring like weather. The OXFC won that encounter by 8 points in a desperate finish.
As if to confirm the evenness of these sides, the ladder at season end had Old Xavs on top, with a one game margin and percentage over second placed De La Salle.
When placed in the context of this year long rivalry, a convincing win over De La followed in the Second Semi Final, had only the effect of placing us in the Grand Final with a week’s rest.
Over The Boundary Fence: By Barry Richardson & Tim O’Shaughnessy

First Half by Barry Richardson:
Grand Finals, nothing like them! My final game of AFL Football was the 1974 Grand Final, and five minutes before we ran out on to the MCG, my mate Neil Balme gave me some interesting advice. He said, “Bones, not a good idea I reckon to get the ball in the 1st five minutes”. When I asked him why, his answer was that “everyone else wants it really badly”. Whimsical comment no doubt, but it had some merit!
Lining up for the Anthem, the Xavs certainly looked bigger and more muscled than their opponents. Xavs players would suggest that the ongoing contest between A. Bowen and M. Ball to appear as the most cut, may have influenced the rest.
Extra strength proved useful, as from the onset it was obvious that Simon Lethlean and his able assistants, had decided that the free running, but lighter De La team had to be tackled hard and often. An impressive tackle count of 31 for the half helped set up the final victory, but it was the class of Tim Clarke in the first half that was pivotal. Clarke reminds me of Greg “Diesel” Williams, in that he just gets to the right places at walking pace and then executes brilliantly. Also, Colbert, Mercuri, Darvell, Serafini and Howard were contributing a good blend of hardness and skill, helped by the ruck dominance of the athletic Purss and the big hearted Sapuppo.
It was a tough first half with the Xavs looking in control, but with De La always dangerous. Key forwards in Mannix and Harrison fitted that mantle and they did have enough supply to score more heavily than 2 goals 4 pts till half time, had it not been for a cohesive defence, led by Bowen and Wynne.
I sat with Michael Green, 4 time Richmond Premiership Ruckman and the first Old Xavs Coach to win an A Grade Flag. Neither of us were completely comfortable with the 6-3 to 2-4 score line at half time, both feeling that we just hadn’t put De La away, despite looking the better Team. The 30 tackles were great, but sometimes that indicates not getting first hands to the ball and can prove exhausting. We saw a real need to get further scoreboard pressure after half time, against a very cohesive De La defence, as the opposition runners were always going to be a threat later in the game.
What we did know, was that a team led by the great combatant Tim Fleming, was going to lead contest after contest, in what has become a trademark of this great Club.
Second Half by Tim O’Shaughnessy:
The pattern of the First Half continued in the 3 rd quarter, with hard tackling from both teams, plenty of ball ups and Xavs controlling the game but not quite putting De La away. A nasty clash between Chopper Handley and Jon Mercuri typified Xavs endeavour. A goal to the Dees brought a quick response from the Red and Black through Nick Serafini, where precision kicking took the ball the length of the ground. No panic at this stage.
The incredible pressure by Xavs continued with forwards chasing - I wish that was in vogue when I coached, although Killer’s reply is “there is no need to chase if you mark the ball”.
I recall De La being forced back 50 metres trying to create some run. At one stage I counted 24 players around one of the many stoppages. De La were taking 6 possessions to perform what Xavs could do in 3. At the 10 minute mark, it was Purss out of the centre to Agius to Lynch for a goal. Exactly as what was practised at training on Thursday night, when myself and Peter Darvell were the only supporters not in the bar.
Just before the 3 quarter time siren it was Xavs 9.5 to De La 3.6. A goal on the siren to the Dee’s though, was a problem.
De La got an early one to add to the nerves, however the Xavs had a chance to quickly reply but the resultant point ended up being the only Old Xav score for the quarter. I am glad we didn’t know that at the time. De La started to dominate inside 50’s and gradually eat away at the lead. Nick Wynne did everything he could to hold them out (except hand the ball back to Mannix on a platter, as the umpire was conned by an old stager).
The last minutes were excruciating and when Harrison was eventually paid a mark in the goal square at the 28 and a half minute mark, in the confusion the ump forgot to pay time off. Thank god for Barney Hanneberry, who let the clock run. Where was he in 2001 when Skobbers got 38 minutes with the wind ? (I know I should move on from that).
After the goal there was 40 seconds to go and a great clearance from Purss and the Xavs were home and 2009 PREMIERS (9 .6 TO 8 .9) but who cares about the score. It was an agonising last quarter, but as they say ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL.
After winning 3 quarters and playing terrific football it was a deserved win.
Congratulations to Flemo and all the team on a fantastic performance
To Lethers on doing what very few people thought was possible twelve months ago. What an outstanding leader, to go with an astute footy brain.
To Andy Gowers, Brush and Lex - a job well done.
To De La on a gallant performance, particularly after the Second Semi, THEY ARE A VERY GOOD TEAM.
10 flags in 15 years and 11 A grade flags for Old Xavs and as Ruggy put it so well on Thursday night

Over The Boundary Fence – Reserves : By Phil Oswald

David Landrigan – Demanding one final effort.
Reserves just miss the target
Despite the best efforts of all 22 players, the team fell 28 points short at the final siren against a strong Uni Blues outfit.
The ball was bounced at 11:20 am in perfect conditions at Elsternwick Park with, unusually, not even a hint of breeze blowing.
The first quarter was a typical Grand Final tug-of-war with both backlines on top. Nerves were clearly on display with many turnovers and the Old Xavs struggling to hit a target. Sticks was dominating in the ruck and scored the first goal courtesy of a great pass from John Pasceri. Only 6 points separated the two teams at the end of the quarter.
Old Xavs levelled the scores at the 3 minute mark of the 2nd quarter through a great snap from Santalucia. Another hard fought quarter and at the 15 minute mark, Pasceri slotted one through from the 45 metre arc and the scores were 3 goals apiece. At the siren Uni Blues led by 4 points in a very tight tussle.
Unfortunately the game slipped away in the 3rd quarter with the Old Xavs only managing
1 goal and a point to Uni Blues 5 straight goals. Travis Ruyg was in everything and the backline did well under constant pressure but too many turnovers again proved costly.
Dave Landrigan was inspirational at the break and the boys quickly scored through another Pasceri bomb that closed the gap to 22 points. Another Pasceri shot on goal 2 minutes later was just wide of the mark but the tempo was certainly turning. Unfortunately a couple more Blues goals ended our run, but not before Teddy executed a masterful blind turn and kicked accurately for our 6th and final goal of the match.
In a typical, hard fought, low scoring Grand Final the boys held their own in the last quarter, but fell short by 28 points at the final siren. The ‘old’ brigade of Ted Woodruff and Travis Ruyg in their final games were superb for all 4 quarters and Nick Bye, Stuart Skidmore and Andrew Oswald all showed their class and experience throughout the day. Tim O’Meara was in everything early and provided plenty of drive and James McDonald provided a strong focal point in attack all day.
Final Scores:
Old Xavs 1.2 3.2 4.3 6.5 41
Uni Blues 2.2 3.6 8.6 10.9 69
Grand Final Day – by Mike McColl Jones
It was a combination of two people who attracted me to the Old Xavs footy over a dozen years ago.
The first was an old mate, Barry Richardson, who was coach of the Old Xavs at the time. He has been a friend for many years. Barry, his “Skippy” coat and I used to watch the (then) VFL finals at the “G” many many years ago.
I dubbed Barry’s pride and joy, the “Skippy” coat simply because it reminded me of our iconic kangaroo. Barry loved the coat but wasn’t too keen on the nick name. Sadly, “Skippy” is no more. One day when Barry ‘s lovely wife, Judy saw an opportunity, she sent it to the local Salvo’s….they wouldn’t take it, so she presented it to St Vincent De Paul. They thought it was an endangered species, so they said “no” too. Judy finally got rid of it. She cut it up, stitched leather on the pieces and went to a town in Gippsland, where she made a killing selling them as moccasins.
The other person who was instrumental in my attending as many OXFC games as possible was the late Brian Lugar. As people who know me would attest, I generally stay on my
own at the footy…..I am usually the lone figure sitting in the stand at Toorak Park, or standing near a tree at an “away” game. It was on one of these occasions that Brian Lugar introduced himself to me, and we had a nice chat whenever he saw me at the game. One day we were standing together and he took something off his key-ring and gave it to me….it was his 1998 membership medallion….he said “You have this”. I treasured it then, and have done so since. Sadly, Brian passed away soon afterwards.
My first season following the Old Xavs was 1995. It was a premiership year too.
I have some great memories of following this elite football team.
I remember being terrified to sneeze while sitting in the grandstand at Toorak Park, for fear of creating a dust storm. (I once found an old Four ‘N Twenty pie wrapper that had a “use by” date in Roman numerals). I swear I once saw a rat wearing a Swine Flu mask.
Barry Richardson (owner of the “Skippy”) once said to me……”You can only claim to be a loyal Old Xav’s supporter if you attend a game at St Bernard’s on a cold winter’s day”. I did! What a great place to stage a war.
I remember the first time I decided to attend a game at Melbourne University. I think I circled the Uni twelve times before I found my way to the oval, and that was only after getting the Leyland Brothers to show me the way.
I love the annual day at Xavier, which features the school XVIII and the old boys….what a great idea.
And haven’t things changed since I was at Xavier. Now they have a “super box” on the school oval. We were lucky to get a nail on the back of a wall to hang our clothes.
I love the various tuck-shops around the grounds, and especially the “penny lolly” bags that Neil Weatherson packs himself (he sells over 200 kilos a year…..and don’t forget, he opens soon at 133 Mailing Road, Canterbury. That should keep me in penny lollies over summer! One word of warning……Neil’s pies are so hot that I remember one Saturday buying one at about 1PM. It was still too hot to eat at quarter time. I think he’s got an oven that might have been made in Chernobyl. I reckon one of the really great moments in life is munching on a sausage sanger at Elsternwick Park on Grand Final Day – with the Xavs up by 81 points at three quarter time.
I love watching Terry Landrigan’s antics as goal umpire or interchange official.
The club attracts so many great characters………
Bill Carroll, Jack and John Bowen, Graham Sharp, “Porky” Rhoden and the Burnes brothers, Michael Blood, the Bourke Brothers, Peter Ruyg, Robbie Ralph, Alan Bye, Chris Garnaut, Des Lovelock, John Connellan (I think John missed his calling….he could easily have been a professional comedian), Jill and Paul Lethlean, Carl Nunan, Andrew Quin, Damien and Geoff Honan, Andrew McLean, Jack Scanlon, Gavan Woodruff, Phil Carey, Nettie and Wayne Handley, Ted Greetham, Ross Freer, Geoff and Liz Gidley, Adrian Larkins, Mick Hennessy, Peter Rolly Howard and so many others………if I have excluded you, my apologies.
So, here we are….Sportscover Arena, Sunday 20th September, 2009.
I am always accused by people who know me well, that I am “over-punctual”. I usually arrive at the airport so early, I can catch the previous flight…..and Grand Final day was no exception. I arrived before the caterers…..
10.11 AM. I have just read the “Record” for the fifth time.
10.28 AM. I notice something very unusual about today at the “Park” – there is no wind, and what a beautiful day.
10.36 AM. I bump into Terry Landrigan and he tells me he has been “dropped” from his role as Interchange Official. I offer to run a campaign to have him reinstated.
10.48 AM. I read the “Record” again.
10.54 AM. I notice that the GFC has hit the VAFA. There is only a small inflatable castle this year and no train. (I guess Connex has taken it back).
11.10 AM. The reserves play Uni Blues.
11.32 AM. The cars are gradually arriving, and all the catering outlets are doing brisk business.
11.44 AM. Bump into Terry Landrigan again, He’s walking clockwise this time.
1.28 PM. Reserves game ends. Uni Blues are premiers (10.9.69 to 6.5.41). Congratulations to them.
1.35 PM. Read “Record” again.
1.39 PM. Heavy roller rolls centre of ground. It reminds Terry Landrigan of the train, but I advise him not to ask for a ride.
The Main Game.
Old Xavs versus De La Salle.
There are people far more qualified than me, so I will let them talk about the game. All I can say is that it was a well fought contest, with the end result in doubt until the last second. A tribute to both teams.
My best – the entire team, plus all those people who have entertained this “lone figure” over the years.
I congratulate all Xavs sides, but especially the Reserves and Seniors, whom I watch as often as I can.
Thanks to you all, and to all the key officials who manage to get all these teams on the ground each week, and at such a great standard.
Thank you all.
Foot note.
I remember being in New York many years ago….it was a TV function and most people there were American. I met a guy who was from Sydney, and it turned out he was from St Ignatius College – “Riverview”.
We got to chatting, and when he found out I went to Xavier, and followed the Old Xavs, he said “Jeez. You’re in television….…you went to Xavier and you follow the old Xavs…..you must really like a drink!!”.
Remember When: Well Versed in Finals
A footy poem, leapt into my head,
No sooner had it come, than it fled,
It began as a sonnet.
But I couldn’t prolong it,
So here’s Brushy effort instead.
And so is reproduced, a poem penned by Brian Brushfield at the end of the straight six headed “ OXFC Grand final Victory 2000” which includes some names prominent in contributing to this Lugar and some protagonists from last Sunday.
No No, no go to six in a row
Said the men from St Bernards
With the flag held in tow
We’ll book out the bowls club
And give the Xavs the slip
Then back to the suburbs
Still wearing the chip.
And from the first bounce they threw out their best
Eight straight in a half would thoroughly test
Blood off with the blood rule and Byrne was on fire
Time to get ready, the band for to hire.
O’Shaughnessy spoke and eyeballed his bunch
They spoke not but felt it had come to the crunch
With Five on the belt, the sixth looking grim
It was time to go wallop and make their lights dim.
From boundary to goalpost a goal Jars did manage
Forty kicks for the day did belong to Ben Cranage
Wowsa a medal, the Hyphen snapped Three
The backline with Brushies talk to Char- chee
Andy Gowers and Luce, Jamie, Flemmo and Hawk
Just kicked, marked and yapped
Till the B’s couldn’t walk
Then on came Flash Gordon, blue rinse and all
Gave two mighty backhanders, one at the ball
The big four emerged and started a flood
Richo and Bowen, Andy Dillon and Blood
The rest they got going and started to dance
While fading from view were the wobbly Gollants
Gavan wore red
Flemmo’s mum a black bra
Bowen’s granny saw victory
Her sixth from the car
In a flash it was over
And Terry stood grinning
His pearlys told all
There’s nothing like winning.

Pre match Summary
The Combatants – OXFC vs De La Salle
In their proud histories OXFC has won 10 A grade premierships with De La Salle winning 6**. This can be a trifle misleading as OXFC was formed in 1923 while De La waited until 1955. The great years for De La, in terms of premierships, were between 1977 and 1984, when they secured five titles, whereas the 1990’s were a golden era for the Old Xavs, winning a VAFA record of six A Section premierships in six years (1995-2000) as well as numerous flags in the Reserve, Club XVIII and Under 19 Sections.
Competition A Grade Premiership Tallies
- University Blacks 18
- Collegians 14
- Old Xaverians 10
- Old Scotch 9
- De la Salle 6
L. A. Adamson, who was for thirty years the Headmaster of Wesley College, was the President of Collegians for its first forty years. In 1892, Adamson established the Metropolitan Junior Football Association (of which he was President for thirty-seven years), which in 1932 became the Victorian Amateur Football Association. The ‘A’ Section Grand Final Cup is known as the ‘L. A. Adamson’ Cup. Adamson was driven by his religiously held conviction that games could generate loyalty and character. These noble principles were never more true than today.
Five of Collegians premierships were won while the competition was the MJFA. Also, the aforementioned fact that De La didn’t enter the competition
until 1955, shows that statistics do have a capacity to distort!!
Such seasonal adjustments (footy seasons) must be made with caution and in financial markets they quite often quote seasonally adjusted figures as well. I remember one work colleague being cynical of this and muttering under his breath “It doesn’t snow in Mt Buller on a seasonally adjusted basis either.”
Reserves Squad & Pre Match Summary

The Combatants – OXFC vs De La Salle
In the first half of the year Old Xav’s went down by one point to University in a thriller and won by 14 points in the second game.
Showing similarities to the Seniors performance, the OXFC had a convincing win in the Second Semi Final.
An interesting fact to note: All but four of the above squad have had Senior level experience at some stage of their careers.
Good Luck to the Reserves after a fine season to date.

It has been 8 long years since the under 19’s held the premiership trophy aloft on that final day of the season and all who attended Central reserve to see the next generation of Old Xavs on Sunday, were hoping that this drought would end. Winning the second semi gave them the week off and the boys were fresh and raring to go, against their fierce rival De La Salle.
It must be a pre-requisite of any VAFA finals ground to be windy and true to form it was blowing a gale to one end. As the final addresses were given, the national anthem played and nerves were high, the two clearly best sides for the year, set themselves for their day in the spotlight.
Captain Buckley lost the toss and it was the Xavs who were going to have to face the test of kicking into the wind. Right from the start it was evident that it was going to take something special to score into the wind and this challenge seemed to ignite the Xavs as they kicked the first goal of the game and seemed to dominate play. They followed the coach’s plans to a tee, attacking De La with run and carry, launching the ball forward from the far side where there was plenty of space for them to move. Moylan was the catalyst of this, making dashing runs from the back pocket up to the wing and having a hand in both goals. Signs were also good up forward with big men Richie Johnston and Dan Noonan getting their hands on the footy and pleasing the big contingent of Xavier supporters, especially the famous “Noons Squad” who were in great voice. At quarter time it was definitely the Xavs who went into their huddle the happier of the two teams, despite trailing by 5 points. There was a strong feeling that they should have even been a couple of goals ahead, with some great defence and counter attacking in the quarter not being translated to the scoreboard.
As the second quarter got going, it was clear that De La were intent on shutting the game down with numbers behind the ball. Sanfilippo was getting plenty of the ball around the ground and showing his class, while Cross continued to do what he has done all season and dictate from the middle. However, for all their dominance in possession and pressure, the young Xavs couldn’t seem to capitalise as they broke down across half forward. With about 10min to go until the long break, frustration was building with the lack of space the De La defence was providing and the opposition began to capitalize with some goals of their own and had the momentum going into half time.
The message was for calm from coaches Dino and Maule as they stressed to the players the importance that this premiership quarter would hold. If they could be in touching distance at three quarter time pushing into the wind, then they had every chance of storming home. The players were asked to switch and run and handball at every opportunity. And this is what they did producing probably their best 5-10min of football for the game. Again Johnston was dangerous on the lead, Lachal and Davies were keys in providing that dash and Lees was pressuring at all contests. The Xavs couldn’t sustain these efforts though and as the quarter progressed De La began to stamp their authority on the contest. Their ball use improved and they were able to find their forwards on the lead, instead of the long bombing they had persisted with until then. 4 goals in 7/8minutes put them well in control heading into the last and left the Xavs with all the work to do.
There was still plenty of belief in the Xavs huddle, they had seen many senior teams over the years win from more impossible positions and were keen to add their names to that list. As a smaller forward line surrounded the ever dangerous Noonan, the plan of attack was to get it in quick and long. Also, a big effort was needed in the middle of the ground, where the usually reliable midfield were struggling to get first use. The challenge never eventuated though, as De La held onto their lead as the result became inevitable. The players never gave in, pushing right to the end and putting their bodies on the line. It was just one of those days for the Unders, where they were outplayed by an opposition very evenly matched.
Whilst the players were very disappointed, it must be pointed out that they were a very young side, with many blokes eligible for a second crack next year.
Throughout the year they were fantastically lead by Captain Hamish Buckley, who showed maturity and leadership beyond his years. Team Manager Paul Lachal was a huge help, offering his services each week and providing the coaches with someone they could rely on. And coaches Dino and Maule gave everything to this group of young Xaverians and helped give them the chance to reach that premiership goal and all credit must go to them for doing so.
So another year down and that drought continues, but with the prospect of another keen group of Under 19’s joining this already very talented bunch, I’m confident the Xavs Unders won’t have to wait too much longer!

VAFA Best & Fairest / Leading Goal Kicker / Rising Star
The VAFA held its annual Vote Count and Presentation Night at Etihad Stadium last Monday night. Over 400 people attended the gala dinner where the Best and Fairest award winners were announced.
In a new truncated format, a triumvirate of OXFC past players and officials presided over events. The Craig Willis of the VAFA, Michael Fitzgerald, led from the front, with a fine video presentation, while Michael Sholly hosted the night and Nick Bourke – in his final year as President, delivered a speech highlighting the characters of the VAFA, that make it such a great competition.
As some representatives from another Club left vacant spots at our table, the support cast for Josh Agius, (the OXFC’s sole invitee), consisting of Lex Vasdekis, Matt O’Hanlon & I, dined on more than one of the superlative courses on offer. This was necessary, because although abbreviated from prior years, the night is still lengthy, with vote counts from Under 18’s, Under 19’s and D4 to A Grade. Mercifully, the count begins at Round 14. Other representatives from Monash Blues were also present at the table and were overjoyed at winning the trophy – chosen above all 74 Clubs, for providing the best facilities for an umpires room – something we may aspire to next year!
Josh appeared relaxed and when the cumulative totals were flashed on the screen at the end of Round 14 he was in fourth place, a position he held for the remainder of the count.
Congratulations Josh on a fine year and to Nick Wynne who won the rising star award and finally to Matt Handley for being the leading goal kicker in A grade with 54 majors for the year.
In a first for the VAFA 2 players from our Grand Final foes of Sunday - De La Salle tied for first and were named joint Woodrow medallists. The round by round results were as follows:

Peak Physiotherapy – Update
Last week we contended that our resident physio, Lachlan Giles along with the staff at Peak, was an expert at putting our team back together and keeping them on the park. He can also dismantle opponents and so we informed the reader that Lachie was about to compete again. In a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Nationals update, that has just come to hand, we can report, in the words of Norman May ....Gold. Gold. Gold. Well done Lachie.
Favourite Finals Moments – The Quiz – Prize of a $50 Voucher
This Week’s Question:
This week we are asking the reader to nominate their favourite finals moment from any era.
Was it a blind turn, executed just right, or a tackle at a vital time?
Could it have been staunch defence in the face of an onslaught or a soaring mark above the pack?
The $50 voucher will be nominated at the judges discretion.
This Week’s Answer:
There really is no answer- just fond memories. We have added to the suggested collection from last week.
There were many entries - and unfortunately time did not permit relating them all. To be continued next week.
- Scanlan running down Scotch's captain to turn the game in the final last year
- Lethlean's goal in the 2000 GF v St Bernards
- Ted Woodruff's goal in the 2007 GF (1st qtr) out of mid air
- Lynch's mark and goal with seconds remaining in 05 preliminary final.
- Rush's 3 last quarter goals against the wind in the 2006 GF to win by 10 points (the sealer from 40 on the boundary)
- Scotch ruck Giant Stuart Nankerville spraying his shot after the siren and missing everything to hand the Crocs the 1992 flag by a point! Large being on the goal line exhausted from sprinting from the other goal square to stop a score that never came!
- Any mark taken by Nick Burne in 1981 Finals series- breathtaking!
- 2005 1st Semi Final v Old Scotch. Simon Lethlean’s (frozen rope ) goal. Amazing last quarter to win the game. We went on to beat Old Haileybury in the Prelim (refer Lynch goal). Then played Blues who had beaten us by over 70pts in the last home & away game. We won the flag.
Remember When: 1964 - Reserves & Seniors enter Grand Final – Reserves enter Grand Final
As reported verbatim- in 1964 Ungar (The predecessor to the Lugar)
Phew! What a finish!
With the lead changing at least six times during a hectic last qtr the Reserves snatched victory from the Old Paradians in the last minute of the game and so earn the right to go into the Grand Final.
The first qtr saw an even first ten minutes when both back lines were on top, but then we began to assert ourselves, and with Bob Gilbert and “Jay” Maher marking everything that came their way we were kept in attack, and at qtr time we were in the position to go on with the game and build up a good lead.
The second qtr saw however lamentable football, as players were hesitant in going for the ball, and too often were not prepared to even make an effort to contest the issue with an opponent. At half time we were still in the game, but greater effort and determination was needed to win.
After the interval, spectators were treated to possibly one of the most thrilling games seen for many a year. It was a new Xaverian side that fought out every issue and goal was matched by goal as the ball was swung from one end of the ground to the other. At the end of the 3rd qtr we held a narrow lead, and had a real struggle on our hands as we entered the last qtr.
What a qtr it was – Paradians were soon into attack and they eventually hit the lead and kept the ball on their forward line as the minutes ticked away. During this period the backs held firm, but with time running out it appeared that all was lost.
We eventually got the ball forward and Peter Padfield and Justin Heffey ran in and scored goals. We were in the lead and it appeared we had the game won. But Paradians were not to be denied and they fought back to kick another goal, and they had taken the lead again. With time running out Mark Bowden took the ball from his back flank to the half forward line, and on the defensive kick from the Paradians, Mark gained possession again and put it through. Again we were in the lead.
Paradians attacked again but the backs held firm and the siren sounded with us 4 points up.
It was a great win, especially taking into account that 3 of our forwards, Woodruff, Stanley & Fraser, were kept out of the game, but theses players each deserve credit for the way they fought the game out. Every member of the side played a part in the victory, but 3 players who perhaps deserve special mention are Justin Heffey who dominated his wing position all day, Peter Padfield who was our most constructive forward player and Carlo Leoncelli who, playing his first game at full back, turned attack after attack.
With the same determination and willingness to get the ball, as displayed in the second half of the semi final, victory today in the Grand Final should result. (NB: Ungar’s physically distributed on day of subsequent match). So let’s assurance doubly sure by playing in that fashion for the whole game.
RESULT: OXFC 8.4 52 defeated Old Paradians 6.12 48
GOAL KICKERS: M. Croyle 2, C. Keeshan, P. Padfield, G. Woodruff, M. Tehan, J. Heffey and M. Bowden (1 each)
BEST PLAYERS: J. Heffey, R. Gilbert, C. Leoncelli, P. Padfield, P. Hamilton and M. Bowden.

This Weeks Games - Grand Final Fever
The game providing a glimpse into Old Xaverians future this week, is the vital Grand Final clash, where the Under 19 Premier team will be facing off against De la Salle. This will be no easy task, as victory was achieved against De La at their last outing in the Second Semi Final, after scores were all tied up at full time, until Old Xavs secured victory at the last possible moment in extra time.
The Grand Final will be held at Central Reserve - Saturday September 12 – (Melways Map 71 C5) at 2.15 pm.
The following weekend on Sunday September 20, the Reserves and Seniors will be playing their Grand Final’s at Sportscover Arena at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm respectively. The seniors will be playing either University Blues or De La Salle while the Reserves will be facing the victor of University Blues vs Old Brighton.
Over The Boundary Fence: Seniors

Simon Lethlean – Setting the ground rules All the President’s Men – Simon Hunt Flanked by Mr Ruyg & Mr Rogerson
The Reserves Fantastic win set up the day & showed that the breeze to the scoreboard end was 3-4 goals. From the first bounce it was apparent that Xavs were there to play as was exemplified by the skippers tackle in the first minutes of the game.At the first break we led by a point & the faithful salivated at what may happen next.
Five goals in the second quarter was a good effort by the forwards & the midfield, but even more significant was the backlines’ performance, with help from a disciplined midfield & forwards,to contain DeLa to zero.
Another 5 against the wind & restricting DeLa to 2 for the quarter was the ,to quote David Parkin, the premiership quarter. So at ¾ time a lead of 53pts.
Even Jack Bowen had a smile on his face at the bounce of the ball for the last quarter,& the crowd on Knowledge Hill got louder ,sarcastic, funnier & jubilant as the Xavs piled on 8 goals to DeLa’s 2.A big win,but there is one game to go.
A fine performance by all players & it would be unfair to give best players because it was truly a team effort.
Over The Boundary Fence: Reserves

Dan Rush – Man on a Mission Chachi & Team
A fine day at Sportscover, with a breeze favouring the scoreboard end, but nothing like the gales seen during the Club XVIII finals series. An advantage, but not an absolute advantage. So it proved in the first quarter. We kicked 4 2 against the breeze to Uni Blues 1 2. This included a great Pasceri goal from a set shot a long way out. A positive start marked by good use of the ball.
The second quarter saw a tight contest for the first 9 minutes. Dan Rush then snapped a goal and in the next 4 minutes added another 2 both from difficult set shots from the coaches’ box forward pocket. At the 24 minute mark Dan snapped another and John Pasceri kicked another at almost the 27 minute mark.
A 5 goal straight quarter saw us well placed at half-time although the hard-working Uni Blues had added 3 goals against the breeze. 9 2 against 4 3 – what would the 3rd quarter hold?
Well let’s switch correspondent’s and find out.
Old Xavs started the second half with a burst out of the center, Bye to Santalucia to Skidmore who kicked long to the forwards but only to be spoiled by the University Blues back men.
Although with a lead of 29 points Xavs were cruising, the Blues kept coming and Xavs running game stopped and became no-existent.
The Xavs defence was put under a lot of pressure, but with the calm cool and collected determination of Gidley, Oswald, Woodruff and company, the Xavs maintained a handy lead of 19 points at the final break.
The final quarter started with an arm wrestle with Uni Blues trying everything to get the upper hand, but with the greater desire and determination to win a place in the Grand final and some brilliant play by Santalucia and company the game was sealed with three quick goals at the 10 minute mark.
A great win in the finish by 49 points and a place in this year’s Grand final.
Sera going from one season into the next
To ward of the ‘boredom blues’ Old Xavs backline hero Nick Serafini is looking to move straight into a role as a spruiker for the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

The story so far...
The Importance of Injury Management
In AFL ranks, nowhere has this been more in evidence than at St Kilda, who made a conscious decision to lure the main injury
management specialist away from the Sydney Swans. Consequently they have had a vastly superior year to other sides, in turnover of players.
The stated philosophy of the President - Simon Hunt
As stated in the June 2009 edition of the Xavier News, one aspect of the Club’s Philosophy is to assist player welfare on field, by having the highest spend on medical/rehabilitation services.
Finding the Best & Why they are the Best
After an extensive pre season search, it became readily apparent that Peak were the superior choice. Why?
Their physiotherapists have provided physio full time to the Indian Cricket Team, Carlton Soccer (NSL), North Melbourne Football Club and many other local and national sports teams and athletes. They treat all injuries whether you are a weekend warrior, elite sports performer or couch potato.
The Outcome – from Simon Lethlean
These guys have been just sensational for us this year. We have every player up and ready to go for finals and the professionalism for an Amateur Club has set the benchmark.
How the Reader may Assist and Incentives to do so
So far Peak have provided Lachlan to attend training on rates, subsidised by Peak. OXFC would like to meet Peak half way, by supporting their practice.
Thus, to celebrate Old Xavierians entry to the Grand Final, any new patient who books an appointment with Lachlan Giles (Old Xavierians physio) in September/October and mentions the Lugar, will receive 20% off their initial consultation fee. Note: Current Club arrangements provides for all Old Xavs players to receive a 10% discount on all their physio consultations.
Approaching Lachlan
Your correspondent tends to give advance warning when approaching from behind, so as to not trigger any automatic responses. This weekend at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, he is competing in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Nationals (and also doing the physio work). Last year he won gold in the Purple belt division but is competing in his first year as a Brown belt. Hopefully he can bring home the gold again this year.

Remember When: 1976
The Sense of excitement was tangible in the 1976 edition of the Ungar, edited by Andrew Quinn, when reporting on Second Semi Finals.
It began with an A) OXFC history in winning premierships to date , B) gave an account of reaching C grade and C) The match report.
A) OXFC history in winning premierships to date -1976
Since 1923 OXFC have won 5 Premierships
- 1938 C Grade
- 1948 B Grade
- 1962 B Grade
- 1964 A Reserve
- 1966 A Reserve
B) C Grade reached- Now the Flag
Supporters, players, officials, coaches and others jumped in unashamed joy (whilst some of the older heads even wept) on the 28th of August when the bell rang to give us victory by one point over Ajax in the second semi and ensured us of a place in C grade for 1977.
In a tense last 5 minutes of play, the backs held firm to the one point advantage gained and defended stoically under great pressure.
I shall leave the finer details of the match to the report from our ace sports scribe John Unkles who, together with Michael “Shirley” Rush, contributed regularly to the Ungar for which I thank them.
Congratulations are already due to coach John Sanders for his motivation and desire to succeed. On several occasions, he had pleaded with reluctant players to strip and after the third telephone call on a Saturday morning, they have agreed. But John won’t be satisfied unless we win that flag.
If all the players show the same determination as Peter Naughton, who in that last quarter against Ajax doggedly chased and caught Ritterman on several occasions, then we can be sure of victory.
C) Stirring Victory over Ajax
A stirring game for players and supporters saw half our dream realised – elevation to C grade. Now for the Grand Final and our first senior pennant since 1962. Fourteen years is a long time between drinks.
Both teams started in tentative fashion until the Jackers scored the first goal. It appeared a matter of how long we could hold them out, but we started to fire just before the first interval and were only a few points down.
The second qtr was all ours, ending 26 pts up at the big interval. John Noonan and Brendan O’Sullivan dominated around the ground and our half back line stood like a rock.
The 3rd qtr was a reversal of the 2nd. Ajax fought back to within a couple of points. John Nankervis and Fran Browne were instrumental in us being ahead at ¾ qtr time.
The last qtr was a heart stopper. Every time Ajax scored we scored and it was a credit to our players that they withstood such pressure. All players dug their heels in and refused to be beaten. Steve Curtain’s handpass from 15 yards out for a point will never be forgotten – what great presence of mind.
Everyone in the club and the supporters old, new and from the woodwork, congratulates the players on a great game and wishes them the best for today. Also a word of appreciation for Andrew Quinn whose time & effort in producing these Ungars regularly has added more spirit to the Club.
BEST: John Noonan, John Nankervis, Dave Fitzpatrick, Don Smarrelli, Brendan O’Sullivan. Fran Browne, Abo Romanin.
GOALS: Pat Brosnan 4, Steve Curtain 3, Chris O’Neill 2, Gerry Sholley 1, Peter Naughton 1, Brendan O’Sullivan 1, John Noonan 1.

This Weeks Games - Finals Fever
This Saturday, September 5 at Sportscover Arena, the Seniors take on De la Salle, in the second semi final at 2 pm.
At 11.30 am, the Reserves, after a great season under the guidance of David Landrigan & his assistant David Walsh, are looking to overcome University Blues in the second semi final.
While on the Saturday of following weekend, the Under 19 Premier team will be facing off against the winner of the De la Salle vs University Blues clash this weekend.
The Grand Final will be held at Central Reserve – (Melways Map 71 C5) at 2.15 pm.
Over The Boundary Fence: Anonymous Contributors

The coaching & support staff with camera man Tim Clifford The Knowledge Hill referred to below Quarter Time Address
Early arrival at the Harry Trott is a must or you will walk for a mile after finally locating a car park. Heavy rain during the second quarter of the Reserves game has left the surface a bit slippery.
No Fleming, Colbert or Larkins from the selected side. The sun came out briefly when the Seniors are led out by a fit looking Matt Ball.
Collegians have a lot to play for (fourth spot) and from the bounce are hard at the ball and we are missing Handley up forward. Poor kicking from Collegians flattered the Xavs, who go into the sheds 21 points down.
During half–time, the pundits are worrying about scores from other grounds. The news that Scotch are well up delights the Lions, and updates coming through from the De La Salle vs St Bedes / Mentone Tigers has Knowledge Hill pondering about the Second –Semi and has Dermot Dann (pictured) gripping his radio.
The second half is much better, particularly the last quarter. Lynch performed well kicking 3 for the game, while Chris Smith slotted home a couple. Significant contributors were Purss, Prowse, Agius, Darvell and A.Ryan.
However, the Lions prevail fairly convincingly. Their joy turns to dismay when they learn of Old Scotch’s reversal of fortune.
The Xavs faithful reflect on the season where we lost only thrice and now look forward to the REAL season, commencing on Saturday against De La, at one of our favourite venues.

Under 19 Premier 2ND Semi Final Match Report- by Pat Halpin
Semi Final vs De La Salle August 30 2009 at Trevor Barker Oval

The Joy of Winning - Post Game, Post Team Song The louder supporters - who owned that foghorn! The quieter - but no less interested crew
In a game that could well have been penciled in at the start of the season because the fixture in the first week of the finals has been so regular over the last 5 years, the Under 19’s Xavs were looking to overturn a record, that has not favored it in the past. However, those in the rooms at Trevor Barker oval pre-game, got the feeling that this was a side determined on changing that record.
With the wind unexpectedly tame for this ground, the U19 Old Xavs took on the top of the table De La Salle, who after losing to our boys in round one has gone 17 matches without a blemish and taken all before them. It was a near full strength Old Xavs side that took to the park for this game though and with the inclusion of some key players back from injury such as Noonan, Evans, Stean and Ulbrick the boys were confident that they could more than match it with their more fancied opponents.
The start was what you would expect from a final with the pace fast and the footy hot. It was the Xavs that settled the quicker though with the on ball brigade putting on a clinic. The first 5 centre clearances went our way and with big Noonan and Richie Johnston charging out of the goal square, the Unders were looking like the side sporting a 17-1 record.
Coaches Dino and Maule planned meticulously for their opposition, which was evident as key players from De La were shut down and frustrated by tight marking and run from half back. As the first quarter siren sounded, it was hard to find a player that had not had a win. Relentless full ground pressure had found the opposition in unfamiliar territory and resulted in a 5 goal lead to the Old Xavs.
As the second quarter settled, De La began to lift but every goal was answered by the Xavs and when Noonan goaled from 45 in a tight pocket, much to the delight of the large crowd, it seemed, even this early as if they could do no wrong. With both sides kicking 2 for the quarter (xavs into the wind), Tom Rowse’s efforts at full back were the centre of much praise from the coaches and team-mates, as he held the league’s leading goal kicker goalless and virtually kick less, something that he maintained for the rest of the match.
The message at half time was clear, that De La would come and we needed to absorb the pressure while continuing to run at them and take the game on. And come they did. Their good players started to find the ball and use it well, the intensity lifted and they began to find their feet. The young Old Xavs defence however was immense and limited the damage. Lead by Vice-captain Moylan, they threw their bodies in and held out a wave of attacks from the minor premiers. The physicality was also increased and when a few heavy hits left the Xavs a couple down on the bench, it was left to a few others to step up. The margin was reduced to 12 points at the final break.
The rain started to fall, which made for a real slug fest in the last quarter, as both sides traded blows early on. James Woods was creating the spark for the Xavs on the wing, launching the ball forward and then dropping back to take marks on the last line. His ability to handle the ball in the wet was amazing to watch and helped set up the Xavs first goal in the last quarter. Both sides began to tire, Noonan was sent back to shore up a undermanned defence and stem the flow of goals. This created space up forward and small forwards Parker and Bissit used their pace and agility to get into dangerous positions. With 4 minutes to go, De La goaled to give them the lead for the first time in the match. Whereas in previous years, sides have been run over, this side found another gear and pushed hard for one last effort. With one point separating the sides things were getting desperate. However another long entry from Sam Lees deep into the Xavs forward line, as he had done all day, saw the ball come to ground in a dangerous position. Under the pack Parker emerged with the ball, with seemingly no-where to go, it looked to most as if he had handballed for a point to force a draw until it was clear he had seen Bissit out the back and he was able to gather the ball and dribble the winner home. A nervous 1:40 remained and some Leo Barry heroics from Woods on the last line and plenty of men behind the ball saw the Old Xavs hold out for a memorable victory.
Credit must go to the players who had belief in themselves and the ability to execute the game plan put in place by the coaches. It was a great day and puts them in with a chance to join many other greats at this club in winning a flag. Congratulations also to coaches Dino and Tommy who have taken this side to this point with hard work. It would be great to see as many as possible down there next Saturday to support the Under 19’s in the quest of premiership glory!

Q Your greatest ongoing challenge?
A Stopping queue jumping on Saturday’s in the medical room. Current offenders being Andy Bowen and Liam Ginnivan.
Q Worst Injury?
A Two or three years ago a collision between two players resulted in one being knocked out and ultimately requiring a helicopter to ferry him to the Alfred. All ended well.
Q Three favourite dinner party guests?
A Germaine Greer, Pink & Jimmy Buffet.
Q Why so long at the Xavs?
A Because they are winners, a great standard of footy to watch and the supporters are great.
Q Favourite Coach?
A The interviewee far too diplomatic to answer this one.
Note: Sticks (Nick Bye) and Turtle (Tim Clarke) have for the past few years had Helen nominating her Top 5 favourite players every year after the final game. Helen would like it to be known that all positions are up for grabs and that she is not beyond accepting bribes.
Old Xavs would sincerely like to thank Helen for her great input into the Club and we wish her well, in all future endeavours.

A large Week in Football.........
Greetings to all on the eve of the most hotly contested and eagerly anticipated AFL Finals series in many a year. 5 teams look genuine chances and I still haven't written off my Blues, although they looked less than impressive on Saturday against a nimble Adelaide Crows side that seemed intent on embarrassing the eco-warriors from Visy Park.
Is anyone else concerned about the possible stem cell work being done by Professor Neil Craig and the boys in the lab at AAMI Stadium?
You can't tell which Crow is towelling you up! Van Berlo, Doughty, Vince, Reilly, ...They all look the same!
Do they have belly buttons? I'm not sure....

The Crows face the media yesterday morning...
To try to make sense of the 2009 Finals Series is not an easy task, so to further muddy the waters here is my take on the Finals matchups, the winners, the losers and why.
Also something from the late, great and hilarious Jack Dyer for each game.
Fri night - AAMI Stadium - Crows ($1.12) v Bombers ($6.35)
Dyerism for the occasion - "Tell him he is John Coleman and send him back on" - upon being told by medical staff during a Finals series that a concussed player didn’t know who he is.
We kick off with what appears to be the easiest game to pick, the Bombers weakened by injury and suspension make the trip across to AAMI with very little to lose. This is a big night for the Crows and expect numerous Sth Australian tuxedos in attendance (Jeans + denim jacket) and Neil Craig may even put his teeth in for the event. His Finals record is not great and he'll be looking to improve it at Essendon's expense. They will... They are playing the right football at the right time and the Bombers can't match them. Pace will be the Dons only weapon and Adelaide are quick too. Crows by 56 points.
The Adelaide Crows Media Manager greets the press at the recovery session last Sunday...
Saturday afternoon - MCG - Geelong ($1.87) v W.B. ($1.95)
Dyerism for the occasion - "Retaliate first!" To his players before a final.
This will be a quickand skilful game, decided by the side whose midfield kicks more goals. Both forward lines have come under fire for underperforming, inaccuracy in front of goal, being midgets and more. The Bullies in particular are seen as undersized but they are kicking winning scores and come into September with 3 wins against their fellow Finals combatants on the trot. The Cats have limped in but only a fool would pick against them in September... Bullies by 9.

Bulldogs forward coach S White addresses the troops...
Saturday night - The Gabbatoir - Bris ($2.00) v Carl ($1.82)
Dyerism for the occasion - "
Bamblett made a great debut last week and an even better one today"
Whoever made the Blues favourite for this match was clearly not at Etihad last Saturday arvo. I think they will win but unfortunately I always think they'll win. It may well come down to how truthful Michael Voss has been this week. Apparently Black, Bradshaw, "Sauce"Merrett and Drummond are all "unlikely to play". At least 2 of those blokes will play. Voss is playing Ducks and Drakes which, as far as I can tell, is some sort of wildlife role-playing game. He better get his head back into this game because Murphy and Judd will not submit stinkers like last Saturday 2 weeks in a row. Blues by 17

Whatever floats your boat Vossy....
Sun afternoon - MCG - St Kilda ($1.63) v Coll ($2.30)
Dyerism for the occasion - "I only have 2 words for you men - believe in yourselves!"
The last Final for the weekend should be a cracker. Collingwood suffered a hiccup last week against the Doggies and will be anxious to atone, whilst the Saints have been less than stellar in the 3 weeks leading in. Both sides thrive on pressure and are led by coaches of contrasting styles. Strollin' Rossy Lyon and Chuckles Malthouse are different characters with a similar ethos. Tackle and pressure until you have the ball then don't give it up. The Pies tend to make their way forward along the boundary while the Saints prefer the corridor. If Kozzie is on the Saints win, if he's not they still might. The Maggies need Cloke to step up or they may face a rampaging Crows side in Adelaide next week. Lyon always seems relaxed but the pressure will be almost unbearable on the Saints if they face elimination in the second week of the Finals after the season they have had. It won't come to that, St Kilda by 19.

A relaxed Lion refuses to answer questions about Nick Riewoldt's possible knee injury...
So there you have it people. Get your multis on with conviction. The entrails/tea leaves/Herald Suns have been read and the answers divined.
Disregard at your peril...
In the important matches for the round the 1's will fix up our fellow Catholic foes at Sportscover on Saturday as will the 2's to join the U/19's in a straight entry into the GF.
Get there if you can.
That is all.

This Weeks Games - Round 18 - Saturday August 29
Like an Agatha Christie novel our 6 teams have been reduced to 3, after last week Grand Final of the Menages and the Under 19 2’s finishing in a credible 6th place after a good run of wins in the latter part of the season.
Ladder leaders, OXFC (15:2), having secured top spot for the home and away season, take on Collegians at the Harry Trott Oval (Melways 58 A8), who have a lot to play for. Should they topple Old Xavs by a significant margin and in turn Old Scotch are victorious over University Blues by a similar margin, they may slip into fourth place for the finals series, commencing the following week. Meanwhile, the winner of St Bede’s/ Mentone Tigers vs De La Salle (played at De La) will determine Old Xav’s opposition in the second semi final the following week.
The second placed Reserves (14:3) after their comprehensive win last week, are playing Collegians at the Harry Trott Oval at 11.40 am.
In a great home and away season, the Under 19 Premier side (16:2) finished second on the ladder and are playing De la Salle on Sunday at Trevor Barker oval (Melways 76 F8) at 2.15 pm in their second semi final.
Over The Boundary Fence: by Jack Scanlon

Andy Bowen – Stand in Captain for the day
It’s hard to know what expectations to put on your team when they are top of the ladder, have been consistently there all year, almost at the business end of the season, don’t need any injuries, and are playing the Dons, who stare relegation in the face.
You arrive at the ground to hear that the captain is unavailable, that Clarke, Serafini, and Purss haven’t overcome their injuries. There’s that nagging fear that the boys might underestimate the opposition’s desire to beat the Old Xavs, particularly when a win might mean the Eagles are relegated instead.
The final siren ends the 2nds match (or more correctly, mismatch) with a score line of 30. 30. 210 to Zip . I can’t recall a nil result in 40 years of watching Amateur footy, not in the top grades, at least. So if the Don’s 2nds can only put 15 players on the oval, how will the 1st perform ?
The opening minutes sees an early “trademark” bodywork and mark to Lynch for a major, followed by a repeat, then some Mercuri magic, and one from Chopper Handley, who’s having a great battle with Essendon’s Hughes. It is now 4 zip, but kicking with the wind. 2 against the breeze to the Dons, and it’s not all one way traffic.
The 2nd quarter is pretty even. Some persistent tackling by Mercuri results in his second goal, but Essendon reciprocate. Santalucia kicks truly for another against a stiffening breeze, and the Dons grab one back. Later, Prowse hustles and roves well for another.
“THEY’RE HAVING A GO“ chorus the men on Knowledge Hill, a proper recognition of the efforts of the depleted Dons who want to make a game of it. This is what we’ve come to expect of the Ammos, and it’s a good even game at the “hotdog” break, 7.7 to 4.3
Suffice to say that the opposition managed only one goal against the wind in the 3rd quarter, while the home side bounced out with 6 straight, and a total of 11 for the term to put the result beyond doubt. More importantly, it was a good contest, (particularly to half time), no reports, no injuries, and the prospect of a full squad for the finals. Great to see Matt Ball having some time on the field with the reserves.
Lynch, Mercuri, Prowse, Handley and Colbert were all multiple goal scorers. Darvell, Dynon, and Gidley did what was needed down back.

Menages Grand Final Match Report- by Nick Serafini
Grand Final vs Collegians, August 23rd 2009

The build up- Matt O’Hanlon reading the team The sound, by co-commentators, Nick Serafini & Liam Ginnivan The vision – by Tim Clifford
It was a long and successful season for the Mighty Old Xav Menages – a season that exceeded expectations, created phenomenal momentum, landed several players and a coach on the map, and created the buzz term of 2009; “The Lid is Off!”
Coach Matt O’Hanlon, ‘Supercoach’ to many, brought together a youthful crowd of players with various football experience, but with the same end goal of having fun on the way to winning a flag. It came so close to happening. But, let’s not forget the famous Jesse Owens quote – “Awards become corroded, friends gather no dust”.
Grand Final day at Elsternwick Park is always a special one and carries with it a fantastic air of excitement and belief. The sizeable and constantly growing band of Red and Black supporters dramatically outnumbered the Purple of the Lions and were vocal throughout. The day itself was pleasant, the infamous wind lingering but not overpowering. For the most part anyway.
The boys streaking onto the field looked determined and confident. A lengthy warm-up was a good way to settle the nerves and to get used to the crowd and the conditions. The coaches box was stacked with the brains trust including big names such as Butler, Warry and Maule. The Xavs had knocked off the Lions twice this year and despite their opponents bigger bodies and lack of hair, the Xavs started well with the wind.
The Leadership group was on fire, displaying the tough tackling and head over the footy attitude that had earned the group so many fans during the home and away season. Patty Purcell started with two big tough tackles, Matt Romanin followed suit and set the tone for his game. Peter “The Hitman” Chapman didn’t want to miss out and started well across half back.
This somewhat biased supporter was struck by the pressure the Xavs put on the Collegians midfielders and backman, as the ball spent most of its time on the far wing. Several times the Lions players panicked and kicked wildly and blindly, hoping for the best. James Glen relished the loose ball and calmly slotted the teams first at the 16 minute mark, followed quickly by his left footed counterpart in Romanin. The second half of the quarter was dominated by the Xavs through countless thrusts forward, unfortunately the scoreboard didn’t quite reflect this and the boys held onto a two point lead at the first change.
The mass of Menage’s supporters really showed at the huddle – a massive group had watched the boys split into their respective line positions – forwards, backs and mids. Whilst not many could get close enough to hear the wise words from MOHTOWN, his sternly delivered address no doubt inspired the boys for a big second quarter into the wind.
The umpires obviously didn’t bleed Red and Black as Pete and Marg’s boy Jed was stitched up with the first of two unlucky free kicks against him. James Glen decided to turn things up a notch shortly after, as did Mark Travato who was constantly beating his man to the ball. Those who know Trev will know he is a hard man to get around and his big frame was certainly handy all day down back, alongside big Rory Lynch. Collegians missed a golden opportunity, and with Josh Hanger playing as a high half forward, the boys were working it well into the wind.
Skipper Pete Ockleshaw lifted and started to get on top in the clearances, while Sammy Lukaitis kept jumping away and winning the ruck contests. Pete kept feeding the ball out and the run of players such as Mudgey and Lynch meant the Collegians back line had to work extremely hard. Gary Altis and Morto kept presenting and looked likely a few times, but the Collegians were somehow keeping them a bay. In what was a very even quarter dominated by stoppages, Xavs managed one goal into the breeze whilst Collegians managed 2 goals 5. The margin at the long break was just 9 points and the boys were confident heading into the Premiership quarter with the wind at their backs.
No doubt Gary Altis got some words in the ear from the coaching staff during the break, his passion, endeavour and tenacity clear to all from the opening bounce of the 3rd quarter. In hard several times, he created opportunities for Josh Hanger, who had three quality possessions in 30 seconds to send the ball deep into our attacking zone. The run of Mudgee was obvious and a fast break in front of the big crowd was the most exciting play of the day. Big Rory McCormack in the long sleeves battled hard down deep, his opponents coming at him thick and fast. Frankie Dimmatina was moved to half forward and started to get his hands on the ball and Jed got stung yet again. The Xavs had all the play but couldn’t get it through the big sticks as often as they would have liked, scoring 1 goal 6 for the quarter. The half backs had their best quarter keeping the Purples to just one point. 2 points the difference.
The final stanza followed on from a very lengthy break, with both sides getting some inspirational words from their coaches. MOH’s philosophy was pretty simple – be smart with the footy, go wide and run it up into the wind. Morto jumped into the ruck with Mudgee appearing to be the spare man. Collegians managed their first goal 3 minutes in, and despite the best efforts of a tough, passionate and proud team, they ran away in the last quarter.
It was an incredible season and one to remember for all involved. Hats off to the boys, the coaching and support staff, to all those who played on the day and to those who helped the side get the minor premiership and win a hell of a lot of fans. I can only imagine that the numbers will swell over summer, the band-wagon will continue to grow, and that the lid won’t stay on for long…………….. Bring on 2010. Go Xavs.

Over The Boundary Fence: by James Hawkins

Dan Higgins –Departing the field in style upon his 100th game after a rampaging Nick Dimattina - Focused on the task ahead in the Senior’s game.
Seconds victory. Andrew Quinn in background- backing up assertion in Section 6.
Spinnaker up down Nepean Highway and arrived in Mentone in just a couple of minutes. A few Melways checks to find the place and arrived at ‘Windisi Oval’. The turf wasn’t in the greatest condition, some concrete had just been poured in the centre square and it safe to say it was blowing a gale. Pretty sure it wasn’t going to be the greatest day for some clean A Grade football.
A big game for both sides, with the chance for St Bedes to settle closer to a ‘top two’ spot. The radio waves mustn’t have reached the deep south and ‘Inner FM’ chose the Ivanhoe vs Scotch game ahead of this one. An interesting choice.
Reserves had a good 29 point victory and with Flemo absent, Clarkey lead Xavs onto the ground as skipper as Dan Higgins was chaired off for 100 games. Well done Higgo.
With Bedes kicking with the gale towards the ‘sans Coles end’, Xavs did a great job at holding them at bay. Dimma and Purss were busy up back as Bedes attacked, but a few handy goals against it by Xavs, including a good slot by Sups, saw it fairly even at quarter time. The Bedes quarter time address was somewhat muffled and gave me nothing. Should have stood downwind.
The second quarter saw Xavs with the tornado. This time it was Bedes turn and they kept the boys at bay. Some lost chances kicking for goal but Darvs and Clarkey continued to be busy through the middle. The highlight of the quarter however was a Mercuri goal kicked out of mid air and also out of one of their hands?!?!. Still not sure what actually happened - but a great goal.
A pie at half time and some eye candy from the canteen got everything set for an interesting second half.
The wind and sun had now fully set the concrete in the centre square as Bedes came out with an extra spring in their step. A clever Agius goal, followed by one from Colby and then Mercs kept us again in touch against the wind. However Bedes forwards began to lead up well and their runners slotted a few handy goals. A goal right on the siren didn’t help our cause and put them 20 points up at ¾ time.
Some long points by us with the wind in the last and then some late goals by Bedes, saw St Bedes home by 28 points.
A. Ryan and Josh Agius were good all day as well Mercuri up forward who ended up with three.
An ominous win by Bedes heading towards September but we still sit one game clear on top. Back home next week and up against Old Essendon.
Note: James’s record for OXFC was outstanding: OXFC Player 1993 – 2004 (205 Games), Captain U19’s
Premiership 1994, Reserves B & F 1995, Reserves Premiership 1995 & Seniors Premiership 96,97,99,00.

Michael was asked to write the following, when both his son Matthew and Nick Quinn, son of current sponsor and avid supporter Andrew, were playing in the 2001 Under 19 Grand Final.
In big games, when Michael was coaching, he always tried to get this message across - despite Steve Curtain’s recent dig at Michael demanding - Why was he never told about this? - when coached by Michael in 1980 & 1981 !!
PLAYING IN GRAND FINALS
In reflecting on grand finals my memories go back over thirty years to 1969 when Richmond faced Carlton and as a 21 year old ruckman I faced the great John Nicholls. There were many expectations upon me and therefore it made me think about how to play in a Grand Final.
I was a university student at the time and I spent several lunchtimes at pizza places in Lygon St with my teammate Barry Richardson talking about playing in finals and especially grand finals. We reached the conclusion that there is only one thing you can control in the lead up to a game and that is what goes on in your own mind and therefore the only thing worth worrying about or focusing on is this – your attitude.
If you cannot control something don’t even think about it. Therefore don’t think about your own game – whether you will get kicks or marks or whatever – nor your opponent nor the weather nor the umpires because all these things are in the future and you can do nothing about them. Therefore forget them. Concentrating on these intangibles leads to worries which can be overwhelming.
The only thing you can control is your attitude and therefore that is what to focus on.
Of course this raises another question – what is the right attitude? Again, on the basis that you should only focus on what you can control, I did not think about the physical aspects of my game – kicks, marks handpasses, goals etc. There was no way that I could control those things and therefore I didn’t think about them. I realised that what I was striving for in the game was to be successful and so I asked myself what is success?
Again, it couldn’t be an outstanding game because this was something I couldn’t control. So I reached the conclusion that success could only mean doing my best on every occasion throughout the game because this was all I could control. My measure of success was not statistical but whether, after the game, I could truthfully say to myself that on every occasion when the ball was near me, I had done my very best to win the ball, or whatever else I should have done within the framework of our team plan.
To carry out this aim I did two things. Firstly, before every game, in the little room where Tom Hafey used to address us about tactics etc, I would make a silent promise to each of my team mates that I would do my best on every occasion throughout the game. Secondly, because it is too long to contemplate maintaining that level of intensity for the space of a game, I made my commitment a quarter by quarter thing. In other words I would mentally wipe the slate clean at the finish of each quarter and make a fresh commitment at the start of the following quarter to do my absolute best for the next 30 minutes.
Therefore in 1969 I developed a strategy which helped me through 3 grand finals. It was:
- To only focus on what I could control, which was my state of mind
- To define success as doing my best on every occasion
- To make a personal commitment to each of my team mates, on a quarter by quarter basis, to do this.
This strategy helped me in 1969 to achieve what I believe, is every footballer’s ambition – to make a worthwhile contribution to my team in a winning Grand Final. However, it is not my fondest Grand Final memory. This belongs to the last quarter of the 1973 Grand Final. Again we were facing Carlton and, from memory, the scores were about level as we started the last quarter. I rucked for most of the quarter and for those 30 minutes I came the closest I ever did to fulfilling my commitment to my team mates to give of my absolute best on every occasion. And again we won.
Winning premierships is a very special thing no matter what team or what competition you are playing in. I got as much satisfaction from coaching the Old Xaverians to premierships as I got from playing in premierships myself. In my experience, premierships are a unique thing in your life. You are rarely granted the privilege in anything you do of setting a clear cut goal - the premiership - and then achieving it completely. And to do it with a group of friends increases the satisfaction. Thirty years after playing in premierships with Richmond, I am still friends with my old team mates and we still get together a few times a year and love being in each other’s company. There is a special bond that won’t go away. And speak to anyone who has played in a premiership anywhere. It is always the same. The bond remains.
(Michael Green played in the 1964 & 1965 Xavier College premiership teams, then went on to play 147 League games, winning premierships with Richmond in 1967, 1969, 1973 & 1974 and coached Old Xavs to the A & B flags in 1981 & 1980)

There has been an avalanche of media devoted to the issue of tanking.
Debating the levels, involvement even the very existence of tanking. Well today I'm putting the issue to rest with the definitive study of the subject and then we can all put this divisive and emotive phenomenon behind us... until next time.
Wikipedia, the noted authority on basically everything, has this to say on the subject : In organized sports, match fixing or game fixing occurs when a match is played to a completely or partially pre-determined result, violating the rules of the game and often the law. Where the sporting competition in question is a race then the incident is referred to as race fixing. Games that are deliberately lost are sometimes called thrown games. When a team intentionally loses a game to obtain a perceived future competitive advantage rather than gamblers being involved, the team is often said to have tanked the game instead of having thrown it. In pool-hustling parlance, tanking is known as dumping. (authors note : I googled dumping to get a better perspective on the issue... MASSIVE error... some things you can't unsee....)
So, it is safe to say that this insidious disease, this scourge on our great game has the potential to rock the very foundation upon which football was built. The win at all costs, never leave a man behind, last man standing ethos which is the backbone of our indigenous game.
In fact not since the Germans rallied in Kursk in 1917 has tanking threatened to wreak the havoc it has in the AFL in 2009.

German vice-captain and elusive forward tanker Erwin Rommel.
"We are just taking it one heavily mechanised, multi-cannoned, tracked vehicle designed to combine operational mobility and tactical defensive and offensive capabilities at a time..."
To better understand the issue as it relates to Australian Rules football it is helpful to look to international sporting events and see the impact tanking has had.
Perhaps the most famous alleged example was the match between Argentina and Peru in the 1978 FIFA World Cup. Argentina needed a four goal victory to advance over Brazil, an enormous margin at this level of competition, especially since Argentina had a weak offense (6 goals in 5 games) and Peru a strong defence (6 goals allowed in 5 games). Yet somehow, Argentina won 6-0. Much was made over the fact that the Peruvian goalkeeper was born in Argentina, and Peru was dependent on Argentinean grain shipments, but nothing was ever proven.
I however have my suspicions...

Numerous changes to the Peruvian side left them a touch undermanned...
In what is believed to be the only example of "extreme tanking" Andres Escobar, a Colombian defender was murdered shortly after his return from the 1994 World Cup where he scored an own-goal, the first of a 2-1 defeat to the USA that knocked out the Colombians at the first phase. In the most believed explanation, the Medellin drug cartel bet large sums of money that Colombia would advance, and blamed the Medellin-born Escobar for the loss.
Here are a few other situations that Andres may have considered immersing himself in which would have been much less hazardous to his health...

But the question remains has this modern day virus impacted on the AFL and if so how?
Well, I think we need to look at the individual clubs and see what, if any effect has been had.
Let's look at this alphabetically (and pictographically). First
Adelaide : 1 tank out of 10 : seems to be all clear, perennially mid to head of the table, strong supporter base.
Tank motif
Brisbane - 3/10 - Never in the tanking spotlight, the Lions are once again in the September fixture.
Carlton - 0/10- Far too proud a club. Would never sink this low. Impossible to comprehend.

It would never happen... but if it did it would look something like this...
Collingwood - 5/10 -. Probably not that necessary this year as they look a legitimate chance to hold the cup aloft (both at the MCG about 5.15 on the 26th Sept and the Abbotsford Cash Converters about 6 thirty if they get too close to the Cheer Squad during their victory lap)
Essendon - 3/10 Another Big 4 side on the improve....Knocked over the previously unbeaten St Kilda.. Still a hateful bunch of rangas, divers, and bogans... They are bloody quick though.
Fremantle - Could be 5 out of 10... could be 3, could be 10 out of 10.
It's impossible to tell. Nobody knows. Freo should be coached by Sybil (or Tara for you youngsters)

Old School New School
Geelong - 0/10 - No need to tank, they just finish up with father/son picks. Scarlett, Ablett’s, Hawkins, there are plenty more. I think we should commission a study on the Bellarine Peninsula water supply... there's something going on there.
Hawthorn - 4/10 and rising. With every subpar performance the Hawks are getting closer to the coveted No 7 draft pick (Joel Selwood, Daniel Rich amongst others) God help us if that tradition continues.
Melbourne - hovering between 8 and 13 out of 10. 99 bench rotations last week, (in the last game they could afford to win and one they set themselves for) 47 bench rotations against North and 49 against Richmond. They are tanking like Mad Tanky McTankerson, the Lord Mayor of Tankerton.

North Melbourne - 4/10 - Have made a good choice in Brad Scott. Hopefully he can put the bone back in the shinbone spirit. Again not easy to
work out if they are tanking or just rubbish...
This is the tankini, it combines the tank top and the bikini.

Port Adelaide - 4/10- They are basically the same as Collingwood... Just smaller and insignificant.
Richmond 6/10 - They actually leak information to the media suggesting they are tanking as a beard for their own ineptitude. Jake King typifies
them. Not big or strong or good enough... but SUPER annoying.

The Tiges also struggle turning the ball over...
St Kilda - 7/10 but the memory is fading. The number of priority selected players to win a premiership is set to triple if the Saints win the flag as expected. They have significantly benefited from priority selections and have built a formidable list as a result.
Sydney - 1/10 - They just can't afford to slip too far due to the fickle nature of NSW AFL supporters.
But if they did..

The city’s storied parade history dictates something with flair...
West Coast Eagles - 4.5/10 They want to but seem to play better when under tank conditions. Bizarre.

Eagles coach John Worsfold just can't seem to get the hang of this tanking thing...
Western Bulldogs - 3/10 - The Bullies just knock around upper mid-table without doing too much damage. Coaching them seems to be a tankless task.
The final word can probably be left to our fearless leader Andrew Demetriou. He has stated on many occasions that there is no issue with tanking and will not be swayed on it. Well he's in a better position than any of us to make this statement. So, as he is stating in the media conference below, "There is no evidence of tanking nor any suggestion that tanking may occur in the future."

Either that or he's saying "LA LA LA LA LA I AM NOT LISTENING.LA LA LA LA LA!.............."
Good luck to the Manages on Sunday.

MENAGES into GRAND FINAL – Sunday 23 August @ Sportscover Arena – 2.30 pm
Over The Boundary Fence: by Mark Woodruff/ Allan Mclean.

James McDonnell, Michael Darvell, Nick Serafini, Nick Wynne, Andy Ryan, David Sapuppo, Es Prowse, Andy Bowen, Michael Mitchell, Cameron Purss, Tim Dynon,
Oliver Gidley, Matt Handley, Sam Johnston, Chris Santalucia Nick Bye & Jamie Kay
The room was that small, that I had to step outside just to change my mind, however what followed was an eye-opener.
Having related to Simon Hunt that I considered inspirational, the quarter time speech delivered by Simon Lethlean (aka Jars) at the Xavier College Scotch game, he suggested I attend the next pre-match address in the confines of the Coaches Room at Toorak Park.
Apart from the players, Simon Lethlean and the three assistant coaches (Each profiled in prior editions of the Lugar), the runner Jamie Kay and stats man Michael Mitchell were in attendance.
The level of pre game preparation that had accumulated over the course of the year and the prior week was striking. However, voluminous information counts for little, unless delivered, as it was by the Senior Coach, in a controlled, directed and succinct manner.
To avoid the fate of one Justin Langer by releasing a detailed dossier on tactics, suffice to say the whiteboard contained numerous tactical points under various headings, which were addressed one by one.
A record of 14 straight wins is a testament to not only the player’s exciting blend of skills, but also in no small measure, indicative of players following the directions of Jars, who is guiding them with a very astute hand.
PS. No man is an island and the support crew in the room, who volunteer their time selflessly, are an integral part of the team.
PPS Also, having had the pleasure of conversing with Simon’s new bride Sarah Lee and his parents Paul & Jill, it is clear that Simon would draw much strength from their backing both at home and on match days.
Speaking of succinct addresses- Club stalwart Allan McLean – has submitted his appraisal of the match from Over the Boundary Fence.
The Old Xavs started well with 4 goals to nil in the first quarter and then proceeded to win the other 3 quarters to finish with 21 goals to 8 and a winning margin of 80 points. Because I witnessed the top team playing the bottom one, the game was hardly spectacular, yet both teams did tackle well. One sensed that the Old Xavs never hit top gear as they won comfortably throughout the game.
My highlights were the game of captain Fleming with 7 goals followed by Handley with 5 goals and they were well supported by Serafini , Larkins , Howard and Johnston, with all team members contributing during the game.
It was a comfortable win and with other results helping, the Old Xavs have cemented their place at the top of the ladder, but the run home against St. Bedes /Mentone Tigers, Old Essendon and Collegians will present a challenge.

Milestone – Daniel Higgins
‘Higgo’ has been one of the most consistent players at the Club since coming down from the College First XVIII side in 2002.
With his trademark fearless attack on the ball and relentless tackling, Higgo has developed into a great leader of the Club, being appointed vice captain of the Reserves side this year.
Whilst having played in the 2006 Reserves Premiership and winning a Reserves Best and Fest Fairest last year, Daniel is still keen to add to his tally of senior games.
We congratulate Daniel on a terrific 100 games and wish him all the best
The Sponsor of the Week – The Waterside Hotel – Stuart Wigney
The Waterside Hotel does not have an involvement because of ex-scholars or past players, the reason is bigger and brighter, they call it “The Large Hawaiian”. Such an impact he has made, we are spending more money to build a suitable bar that will be designed for the big man to have a long lunch by day and a cocktail at night!!
Our other connection is your fearless leader, Tim Fleming who like many of our owners is an ex-Tiger. These friendships, together with an attitude of getting back involved at Club level, has brought the Waterside and its stakeholders together with the Old Xavs.
We look forward to a long lasting partnership and hope to see the Old Xav’s family from time to time for a refreshing ale or a bite to eat on the way to Etihad. You can find us on the corner of King & Flinders or visit our website on www.watersidehotel.com.au for bookings 03 9629 1350.

The Draw
Drawn from a hat in secrecy, in time to be published in the next Lugar.
Grant Thomas- Coach of OXFC - 1992.
Edited Extract from Xavier News – 17 years ago.
Fr season 1992 the Old Xavs have appointed 33 yr old Grant Thomas as its Senior Coach at the Club- the eighth in ten years.
Having played some 93 AFL League games with St Kilda, North Melbourne and Fitzroy between 1973 and 1985. “Tomo” has also had the distinction of representing Victoria in 1981. On top of that, he also has the amazing record of having Captained- Coached Western Districts side Warrnambool to an amazing four premierships in a row between 1986 and 1989.
“An unorthodox pre-season”
In training the Old Xavs so far, it has been interesting to learn that Tomo has definite views about the success of football sides and the importance of training in the build up to a season.
Other than a few “intra club” practice matches through March, the senior side has not incorporated any tackling within its training schedule, and has not trained for greater than 90 minutes.
“Although football is quite the physical game, it is just as much a mind game”, explained Tomo.
“ To play well you must enjoy your football and it is with this in mind that I have decided to try and make training as pleasurable as I can.
I have taken a risk in not playing any practice matches but then again I think you have to ask yourself: Why do you need to do it? Australian Rules is the only sport in the world where sides play practice matches before the season begins. I believe that more is achieved playing intra club games, whereby players compete heavily with a feeling of pride in the contest.
It is also a good opportunity for players to get to know other player’s strengths and weaknesses within their own side, which is just as important as knowing your opposition’s.
Having played under the likes of Allan Jeans, Tom Hafey, Barry Cable, John Kennedy and Robbie Walls, it was interesting to learn that Tomo had the upmost respect for Carlton Premiership Coach, Alex Jesaulenko. It was “Jezza” that alerted Tomo to the importance of football as a mind game.
At his age Tomo seems to have achieved more in football than a man of 40 plus, but that can only be attributed to his own dedication and understanding of the game. In transferring back to Melbourne from Warrnambool, Tomo has also taken on the responsibility of Manager of the MLC Branch at Doncaster. He is strongly supported by his wife Kerry and children Claye (6 yrs), Kacey (4) and Jordan (3 mths).

Remember When
"Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery." Mr Micawber (Who was always being thrown in the Debtors prison) in David Copperfield by Charles Dickens.
Perhaps Charles Dickens would have opted for a neutral state of equilibrium, should he have survived to read the 1966* financial statements of the OXFC as the net surplus was $75.
Certainly, current Treasurer and Vice President Simon McCarthy would have a dramatically reduced workload in that era.
Income was represented by the following “Significant Items”: subscriptions $745, Donations $90, Ladies Committee $451, Raffles $638
Expenditures of a “Material Nature” were: VAFA Fees $600, Footballs $280 Trophies & Presentations $552 while the combined cost of Postage/Phone/Stationery & parking was $ 183.
* Footnote: Decimal Currency introduced in 1966.
Although investigated as an alternative as early as 1901, the decimal system was initially introduced to Australia as an election promise by then Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies in 1958. There was much discussion as to the name of the new currency with several specifically Australian names such as the Kanga, Austral, Dinkum bandied around. Prime Minister Menzies proposed naming the currency 'The Royal' which Treasurer Harold Holt explained 'emphasised our link with the Crown'. However it was a widely criticised choice and in September of 1963 the government announced that the currency would be called the 'Dollar'. The official conversion to decimal currency would take place on February 14th 1966.

6. Funniest sporting moment?
One that springs to memory was in the cricket season just gone. My eldest brother Martin was filling in for the OXCC on a Sunday afternoon on Roche. Martin has been quite the batsmen over the years but has seen himself as quite the potent bowler in the latter part of his cricketing life. Playing cellar dwellers Haileybury, I decided to throw Martin the ball, first change (to Cossies disbelief).
His first ball went no quicker than 21 km/h and pitched about 45 centre metes from his toes. The ball was accordingly dispatched over the square leg boundary. Ball 2 was much the same… by this time the slips were in hysterics. As he ran in for ball 3, play had to be stopped due to constant giggling from the gully region. The umpire was fuming, but Melton somehow managed a dot ball. Ball 4 was again despatched. Ball 5 was a full, out swinging ball which the batsmen couldn’t get bat on ball and the fielders burst out in a rousing ovation. Now with his confidence up, he tried to finish the over much the same… but, it was another half tracker and was hit half way up the spectators hill. 26 of the best!!!
Hilarious.
7. Greatest achievement in life?
Winning the crocodiles Pub Golf tournament on debut this year, thereby ruining The Large Hawaiian’s reign.
8. Perfect Saturday night?

Over The Boundary Fence: by Peter “Rolly” Howard:

Es Prowse, Sammy Johnston & Luke Howard (See Milestones) ARRIVALS–Seconds players paying tribute to Travis Ruyg-100 games DEPARTURES-Rich Carey chaired from field-150 games
Old Xavs v Old Brighton
Much goodwill was shared by all at the OB Lunch on Saturday hosted by Peter Gadsden and also our own Michael Hennessey.
The engineering of the OB balcony was clearly challenged many times during the afternoon and from my vantage point on the opposite wing, I worried that some of our big time sponsors, observing from that elevated site were in danger.
The drizzle had disappeared and relatively kind conditions (for the Beach Road Oval) applied by the time our “twos” had disposed of third placed OB, in another strong display, the highlight of which was surely the 150th game of Richard Carey. Well done to Richard on a great journey of endeavor and commitment to the OXFC and his teammates.
Two changes became one as Chris Smith resumed his place in the starting 18, following a short assignment to Coburg, that lasted all of one day! It was great also to see Nick Bye back in the 22.
There is no justice in this game, when one of our most admired, Travis Ruyg, on the occasion of his milestone 100th for the Club, did an Adam Simpson and tore a calf muscle and was sadly forced from the ground within minutes of the start and had to endure the rest of the day as an observer! What a fabulous recruit / personality he has been to the Club? He will be missed on the paddock at least over the next few weeks, but his powers of recovery are legend so good luck Trav!
Good toss to win but aren’t they all? Downwind went the OX and Damian Lynch had 2 up by the 10 minute mark, the second a highlight following a determined chase and tackle on an opponent, who thought he had more pace than our man. What a cheek! A chain of handballs saw Darvell on the end for a goal and more tackling was rewarded as Es Prowse goaled. While OB snagged two for the quarter, the visitors got to 7.7 with Handley and Clarke adding goals. OX by 5 and a bit was a fair reward for the 36 minutes of effort!
The defense was outstanding in the first quarter, but that was nothing to the stranglehold that was applied to OB, when their turn came to go downwind in the 2nd. It was not pretty to watch if you were an OB fan, but it was a beautiful 2nd quarter by the Xavs who, to a man applied themselves to the task. It was very difficult to score against the will of the OX in the 2nd Q and OBs return of 2.3 with the breeze was a credit to the entire team, who made scoring and in fact any ball movement difficult. The OXavs snagged 3 into the breeze!
The backs again had a strong day but none better than Andrew Bowen and the 3 x Nicks, Dimattina, Serafini and Wynne. Cam Purss did what was asked and played on a tall attacker, who was prepared to play well up the ground in pursuit of easier kicks!
Surely the other highlight of the 2nd Q was Tim Clarke’s roving goal, taking the ball flat out off the hands of the pack and goaling from 30 metres. Goals also to Sam Johnston and Matt Handley took the team to half time, 40 pts up.
Fair to say, from then on the result was hardly in doubt and four more goals in the third, took the margin to 48 pts at three quarter time.
The OB coach was relatively satisfied with his team’s third quarter effort and requested much more of the same in his address at that final break. It was not to be and the 52 pt margin was a fair reflection of the domination of the OXFC across the day.
The home side never gave up, but was only able to score two goals with a strengthening wind in the last. The OXFC added three more into it! Two goals in each of 4 quarters by Old Brighton speaks volumes for the OX defense (and onballers and forwards) who limited the opposition to 62 pts – just less than the average pts against of 64 pts in the first 13 rounds!
Anyone who has watched a bit of amateur footy in the last few years and seen Old Brighton, would have seen what a really good player Adam Pirrie has been for them. He played his “retirement game” on Saturday and will now stop permanently due to injury. It is disappointing for an injury to rob OB of one of their very best players and one who I rate as one of the best marks “at speed” and kicks I have seen – though clearly not better than Tim Clarke!
My very honorable mentions to the following from a strong team on the day: Andrew Bowen, Mick Darvell, Nick Dimattina, Nick Serafini, Sam Johnston, Es Prowse

Milestone - Luke Howard:
Josh Agius(No 14) and Luke Howard applying their famed tackling skills.
Scenes not unlike lions bearing down on unsuspecting prey in the Serengeti National Park.
In a career that has included four premierships at the Club, Howie has proven to be one of the Club’s most fearless players in its rich history. His courage and relentless attack on the football and his opponents has been a hallmark and quite staggering at times, given his stature in comparison to others.
His work rate is as good as any player in the competition and all players at the Club stand taller when Howie takes the park.
Luke commenced in 2001, and made an immediate impact in a Premiership year for the Under 19’s, when adjudged Best & Fairest. The winning run of two Reserves Premierships followed in 2002 & 2006, with another Best & Fairest in 2003. The run of Premierships, culminated in the Seniors flag of 2007.
We congratulate Howie on 150 terrific games with the Club and look forward to further years of his impact as a senior player with the Club.
Big V Representatives:
A number of our players this year have been rewarded for their good form, and been chosen to represent the VAFA in games against other states and leagues. Earlier in the year a bushfire relief game was organised and Tim Fleming, Andy Bowen, and Matt Ball were picked to represent the VAFA. On the same day a VAFA Under 21 side played against Queensland with Nick Wynne flying the Old Xavs flag, while at the same time an Under 23 side played against WA with OXFC young guns Jono Mercuri, Matt Handley, Michael Darvell, and Nick Dimattina donning the Big V.
Only a couple of weeks ago a second rep game was played against a VCFL combined side. Chosen for that game were Andy Bowen and Matt Handley and unfortunately the VAFA side went down by 4 points with a goal to the opposition on the final siren.
Congratulations to all of our Big V representatives!
The Second Coming of Motown - Hits the Airwaves:
Not since 1959 when Motown Records produced a string of hits, has Motown hit the airwaves with such force, as Thirds Coach Matt O’Hanlon and his board man Nick Butler- not content with amusing OXFC, have now targeted Melburnians - as far as reception allows....
The Butts and Moe Show - on SYN 90.7FM
It was with great anticipation and some relief that the long awaited Butts and Moe Show debuted on SYN 90.7FM a few Sundays ago. The two co-hosts, infamous Old Xav U-19 player and current Magneto for the Ménages, Nick Butler and the current Ménages coach Matt O'Hanlon (aka Motown), have been long talked about as a promising radio duo. It was simply a matter of waiting for the right deal to come across their desks (a relatively long wait, considering neither have a permanent desk). But this didn't stop the big names in radio pursuing the double act and ensuring that they grace the airwaves in prime time.
FOX FM called, NOVA left a message, Vega tried (but were told not to bother) and AW wined and dined the talented couple, but SYN (90.7FM) were the lucky bidders, who secured the services of Butts and Moe for a 12 week block of radio shows. There were long deliberations and numerous caveats, but the papers were signed and the show debuted on Sunday 26th July. Some say that Sunday morning radio is underrated and not recognised as "prime time", but Butts disagrees - "Look, SYN have been keen for some time to replace the Auto-DJ from 7.30am on Sundays. Their listeners wanted more, and Moe and I offered them that with our original format of two blokes sitting down for a live chat. I'm pretty sure this hasn’t been attempted before and it's unchartered waters, but we're going to have a crack. At worst, we can switch back to Auto-DJ and no-one would notice."
The show is a relaxed format, with a specific emphasis on lack of preparation and off the cuff humour. Under the watchful eye of Executive Producer Nick Serafini, the show is jam-packed with everyone's soon to be favourite segments including: THE SUNDAY DUST, THE WARM DOWN, ON MOE's MIND and BUTTS' POSER. You can call and text in live to the studio, drop the show a line at buttsandmoe@hotmail.com or become a fan on Facebook.
This week there is also an exclusive interview with AN AFL SUPERSTAR!!
Comparisons with some of the great duo's in history are being made - Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Posh and Becks, Bill and Ben, Batman and Robin, BP and DP - and now BUTTS AND MOE!
Tune into SYN 90.7FM every Sunday from 7.30am for the BUTTS AND MOE SHOW.

Sir David Attenborough, Tiger Woods (has anyone not said him?) and Elle McPherson
3. Funniest sporting moment?
Running over to Galbs (a fellow ménage player), after I had hand balled the footy to him and called for a ‘one- two’ and been ignored, and then literally grabbing it back out of his hands and kicking a goal!!! He fell over laughing, which made it funny I suppose. (You may have had to be there)
4. Best player(s) ever played with?
Natural talent: probably Cadyn Beetham.
5. Greatest achievement in life?
Raising Rusty my carpet python from a mere Dweebster to an 8 foot killing machine!!! Poor fella has been shunted to the shed after we finished our renovations because my wife is a bit harsh.

Carbonara with anchovies.
8. Perfect Saturday night?
A few quiet ones after footy with the lads then going to an organised party. Or going on a night safari drive through the Okavango Delta in Botswana…
9. All time favourite AFL player?
Most likely James Hird. I liked watching him play more than anyone in recent memory.
10. Road to Old Xavs?
It has been a tough one! Had to get through school first. Then went through 2 years of Under 19s, Undefeated mind you. Played a game or two in Under 19- 2s a long the way. Then won, 4 or 5 flags with the crocs. Then played seniors - bit of 2s (with Sh-Gawny) and a bit of 1s!!!! Now in my 5th year with the Menages and looking forward to finals.
A large Week in Football.........
Hi all,
This week sees further changes to the football, social and political landscapes.
Firstly (as always), football...
Karmichael Hunt, a man who may be a walk up start to the 2011 incarnation of my no-namers Dream Team, announced last week that he will be crossing codes. In an unprecedented cross-code switch, Hunt announced at a 10.30am press conference that he is signing with the Gold Coast franchise, which joins the AFL competition in 2011. One of Old Xav's favourite sons, Andrew Dillon was on hand to articulate the AFL'S stance on the defection but was strangely silent on the topic when I spoke to him the Monday before (when I actually could have made some coin on the whole thing).

2 names vs no names
The Gold Coast have opened the door and a number of NRL players, including Melbourne Storm stars Billy Slater and Greg Inglis may now become targets.
Others have attempted the switch but the move proved unsustainable
When asked for a comment on the Hunt situation an NRL spokesman shotgunned 9 Bundy cans, punched a Salvo and called the attending media throng "a bunch of sheilas" before defecating in the SEN van and stealing a small childs scooter.
North Melbourne stalwart (and sometime short film director) Adam Simpson left the game as a player after Friday night's clash against Carlton at Etihad Stadium. After tearing a calf muscle at training during the week Simpson underwent a fitness test prior to the game and was extraordinarily declared fit to play. Citing "deep tissue massage" as the tonic that allowed him to play Simmo flatbatted all attempts from Channel 9's Sunday Footy Show panel to force him to admit painkillers had been administered.
Personally, having viewed the fitness test, the performance and the post-match mobility of the retiring champ, I have a sneaky suspicion that he may have had a jab or twelve...
Roo champ bids farewell to the game...
Simmo is put through a rigorous fitness test by mids coach F Gump before being passed fit to play...
On the social (anti-social?) front, radio bottom-feeder and the artist formerly known as the "nasty judge" on Australian Idol Kyle Sandilands has been sacked from the cushy TV gig and his radio show with Jackie "O" (the O is for Overrated) has been suspended indefinitely. Clearly a case of Judge Rightwhack presiding. The incident, the details of which do not bear repeating, has had the unlikely positive effect of ridding the airwaves of a particularly noxious weed.
Good riddance Kyle, here are a couple of phrases you may want to become familiar with :
"Would you like fries with that"
"Yes I have been actively seeking work"
"Come on Mate, your windows are filthy... I'll just do it and you pay me what ever you reckon..."
See you never Kyle... unless it's at the lights at the corner of Punt and Bridge ....
In political news, former public servant and avid fictional author Godwin Grech admitted that he created the "fake email" at the heart of the OzCar affair. The email alleged PM Kevin Rudd sought special treatment for Qld car dealer and mate, John Grant. When queried on the issue at the heart of "Ute-gate" Mr Grant confirmed what many others already suspected. The phrase "Fair shake of the sauce bottle" does not exist.
This looks nothing like a ute....
To Xavs football this weekend, the 1's will continue their rampage towards September with victory over the Hoer's, the 2's to do the same and remain top 2.
The 19's to smack Uni Blacks whilst the 19 2's suit up against league powerhouse Old Geelong Blacks. A tough task but one our boys are up to.
It's Finals time in Sect 1 of Club 18 and OXFC fields sides in both matches at Ammo HQ on Sunday.
The Menages step up as top seeds to face Collegians with the winner enjoying a week off and a GF berth whilst the C-Diles take on a resurgent Uni outfit in a GF replay from last season.
I love Elsternwick at this time of year and look forward to taking on Collegians the following Sunday.
We just have to make it happen now.
In AFL I'm tipping the Blues to knock the Cats off Fri night, mainly because Chappy is out... A massive blow to my SuperCoach sides but a real plus for the Baggers.
Go Xavs
Go Blues
That is all.
